OT: Lawn sweeper?

Been thinking of buying a new lawn sweeper. I mow lawn so when I'm finished their might be a little hay in the center of the lawn. I like to pick it up and add it the compost pile. Using a bagger picks up too much dust. I like the idea of off setting sweeper to the right and the size. Does anyone own this sweeper? Opinions

George, if you watch local CL you should be able to get one for less than 100.00 bucks. I got one free from a local consignment sale that didn't sell, needed some welding, I fixed it and it works fine. Best to sweep the day after mowing as the grass is dry and lighter therefor does a better job.

My last worn out sweeper came from CL. That's why I don't mind buying a new one.

Yes, I wait for grass to dry before picking it up.

I have very similar in construction. I use mine directly behind a hydrostat lawn tractor. I vary the speed depending on the amount of brush-speed I need.

Also, I modified mine. The leading edge would plow leaves and grass when set low. I took some electrical pvc conduit, I think 3/4, cut it the width of the sweep leading edge, then took a saw and put a kerf cut in it lengthwise. The conduit was then fitted to the front edge of the sweeper and that helped a lot.

I have an agri fab but the Ohio steel ones are a lot better made. I pick mine up right after I mow and feed it to the critters.

Shucks, when I was a kid the lawn sweeper was me and there wasn't any grass. Had to take a broom and sweep the dirt yard when company was coming.

JMHO, but if you want good long-lasting sweeper that works excellent, find an older Case or Ingersoll and repair as needed. It'll last you forever. No longer made, but parts are still available. They are a different design having the bag in front of the brushes and having dual brushes, one to pick up and one to throw forward...

That way as the bag fills more weight is placed on the tractor/mower rather than unloading the rear wheels as all others do.

I have an Ingersoll that I use for picking up leaves in the fall. It works a lot better than the Farm & Fleet sweeper I had. I gave that thing away after I got the Ingersoll. BTW, I pull it with a Ingersoll 226 garden tractor.

I bought a new Agri-Fab this spring from Farm/Fleet, 42 inch, don't like it, brush spins slower than my old Craftsman and is just generally cheaply made junk.

I read the four customer reviews for the 50 inch Ohio Steel lawn sweeper at TSC. Two people gave it a 5 out of 5, other two a 1 out of 5, defective parts or manufacturing, could not get it assembled and operating. So Buyer Beware!

I bought a 30 inch Parker push style lawn sweeper 35 years ago, made a drawbar to pull it and swept grass clippings, leaves, pulled it over hundreds of acres over 15 years of use, finally pulled it into pieces! It did a great job of sweeping until the basket got full. I built a copy of a semi-mounted Trac-Vac lawn vacuum, used my 32"x42"x 12" cart with 24 inch tall sides & top to hold leaves and clippings. As the trees got bigger, cart still too small!

I have a 10 inch sleeve hitch Ohio Steel moldboard plow, similar but more heavily built than a Brinley most people buy. Does a great job of plowing. Dad paid $5 for it at a yard sale, I fab'd up the hitch to pull it with my Cub Cadet. Plowed many gardens, been to 4-5 Cub Cadet plow days.

That sweeper is really light duty. Look for a Parker sweeper. They are top shelf. They where not cheap new either. You have to find used one too. I have found several on Craigslist. Airens bought them in 2009 and quit making them.

For new sweepers it seems like Agri-Fab is getting the best reviews. I know of several and they at least work. The Ohio Steel ones are cheap junk.

Also how you use one makes huge difference too. If you make sure the cut grass or leaves are good and dry then a sweeper works a lot better. Any brand will not pickup wet material very well.
