Looking for advice OT!

We are selling our house, the one we moved in May 21st, long story. The buyers inspector found a mold spot about 12" diameter in the hall linen closet, wasn't there when we moved in. Had sheetrock removed this morning and the round flexible A/C duct is sweating. It's insulation is damaged and wet. Can this type of ductwork be spliced? TIA

Yep. You'll need a new piece of duct and a short metal 'sleeve' to slip into both. The pieces can be attached with screws and a plastic tie, like a wire tie but bigger. both the duct and insulation can be sealed with, guess what; Duct tape.

Do not be surprised if the inspector does not make you determine why the duct is sweating enough to cause mold. I would get it fixed and covered up fast as I could.

It's probably sweating because the insulation is damaged. Without insulation the warm moist air hits the cold duct and condenses on it.

Yes, it can be spliced, but if the inner duct is intact (not leaking air) then just repair the missing insulation.

Either pull it together, or stuff in some insulation and tape it up with aluminum duct tape (not cloth back). Then paint over the area with duct sealer for a permanent repair.

JM ...... if the inspector comes back (which he likely will), maybe he will still want to know why it happened in the first place? Puts the seller in a bit of a bad spot as to what to do in what order maybe? One of those catch 22 situations ......
