Always found it a bit confusing out there, whether some of the equipment was used or just parked for junk. It all seemed to be just let set outside all the time. There were lots of times I would have liked to bought some of what I saw, just didn't know if it was used or just parked.

(quoted from post at 04:53:52 07/24/18) What are the two rake wheels in the center for? Spare's or is there a purpose?

NEKS I am wondering about them too. They are apparently in a "non working" position in the pic. I have always wondered about those big Vee rakes burying green hay in the middle since a lot of the time it would not have been turned. Here in the East we have to be careful not to do that or we get mold. I bet that when you have unturned hay in the middle you deploy the middle two wheels to take care of turning it.

Cat guy they get so little rain they do not worry about shedding equipment as much as us Mid west guys do.

Lived here all my life 56 years and just got a shed about 15 years ago ,, no way can I store all mine inside it would take a 1000' x 2000' shed at least to do it,, like JD seller said my stuff stays better outside than some of my friends stuff does inside a shed in MI less rusting, we get less rain here all year than many others get in a month always get a kick out of comments like this many act like we do not take care of our stuff here, and I get those who want to buy something I have sitting,, and are mad if I do not want to sell it,, its mine if its sits and rusts into the ground thats my concern I paid for it, lol not saying you said that just saying I have heard it before

yeah.
sometimes better off outside than in a wet/damp shed.

except the sun does bad things to rubber and plastic. and paint...

Here in the east we have a pretty much opposite situation. We get a lot of rain, and sheds cost a lot more to build, but where you really pay is in taxes. In many towns you can't save enough on equipment to make up for what you pay in taxes

Back in the 90's I went out to Wyoming deer hunting. I couldn't get over the huge stacks of hay bales out in the open, without even a tarp to cover them. It was obvious that very little rain fell, and any that did evaporated immediately. Stacks like that would be rotten in a month here in Vermont. It's a different world out there.

One size doesn't fit all in farming across the U.S.

A few more pics . The haying operation is my cousins custom operation his dad started to supplement the ranch income now my cousin runs it . The middle wheels on the rake are to turn the hay if you are putting 3 twelves together we are doing 2 fourteens here in good hay . The combine belongs to a guy I met while working on the dairy and he asked if would help fix and then operate the combine he and his brother run a big grain and hay operation.

The first couple years I was in the eastern Idaho desert I couldn’t get over the sight of straw bales being used for roof insulation on potato cellars. The straw bales were on top of the roof exposed to the weather. They would throw sand on the bales to seal the spaces between bales. These bales would last for years. No need to explain what would happen to those straw bales here in Iowa.
