second governor blown apart

The same D-17 engine and unit as my previous post. Am installing the second governor in this engine because it seems the weights pins and clips just blow right off. The gear is totally torn apart at the weight attachment point and I also have to replace the cam gear. I noticed on Combine D-17 engine the governor gear is a lot wider and goes in or onto the cam gear fully. I know that the combine weights only allow for one high speed for its operation and that it cannot be use in a regular engine.. Has anyone ever changed the weights on the combine governor and used it on the tractor/grader engine.. I looked at the D-17 engine service manual and photos show the combine (coned housing) governor on the engine. The only difference on the Model D and the combine housing is the Model D has an oil fill port on it to make it easier to add oil. Does anyone really know? BTW the first governor I put in was about 7 yrs ago.

That looks like a unit off a WD45. Many D17's had a power steering pump, and a tach. drive.

Without research I don't know if the combine engine gear/weights are different from the tractor. The big difference is that the combine governor has an adjustment screw built in, which sets working speed. The "throttle" control on the combine goes to the carb. shaft, and overrides the governor, allowing you to slow the engine down. Whereas on the tractor the "throttle" control is actually a governor control, so that you have "governed" control of the engine at all speeds.

That governor/distributor housing looks like it is from a WD-45......but, I guess it would fit on a D-17 engine as well.
Apparently your D-17 does not have the power steering pump powered off the cam gear, either?

I blew the gears on my D-17 (Series II) a couple of years ago but fortunately I did not damage the cam or governor gears.
With the help of a bore scope and 4 homemade "retrievers" I was able to get all of the pieces out of the timing cover without having to pull the front end off the tractor.
Pieces floating around in there will certainly cause you future problems.
I don't know about the thickness of the gears but the governor parts are the same from the WC up thru the D-17. The one difference being the strength of the springs which was increased to gain more RPMs as the tractors' HP was increased.
I guess I would check to see if the governor is receiving any lubrication as a first step.
I would also check to see that the forked lever is lined up properly with the thrust bearing.
Good luck with your project....hope it all works out.
