Baler questions

I am looking at a New Holland model 658 baler and the seller says that it could be adjusted to make a 4x4 bale. All the info that I can find says that it is a 4x5 bale. I can only use 4x4 bales and do not want to buy the machine if it can not be adjusted to make that size. If you know anything about these balers both pro and con please let me know. I will be using a 95 HP tractor to power it. Thanks for your time.

If it's a 658 far as I know it's capable of up to 4x6 and can make 4x4's if you want. We've had a 648 for years same only 4x5 Max. They make a good bale and once the core is formed they will take the feed fast. They are finicky in the net wrap if it has one but if your looking for an older lower priced baler they're as good as any. If you want to be absolutely sure measure the width of the chamber.

I don't know of a round baler you can't stop before you get a full bale and tie it. 658 shows round bales from 1.1 m (under 4 ft) to 1.8 m. (British site)

Like any variable chamber baler you can make any size bale you want from a reasonable minimum up to the maximum capacity of the baler. You can find the specifications of that baler through a google search.

If it has the monitor all you need to do is program in the size you want, and when it reaches that size it will beep at you to stop, then it will automatically wrap the bale.

Forum member "Lanse" who goes by "ChuckE2009" on youtube has a series of videos on that exact baler, all the trials and tribulations he went through learning how to adjust it, use it, and fix it. His experience is from a total newbie at round balers and round baling.

You can vary diameter but not width I hope that?s not what your asking ? Maybe I?ve been up to long I guess

whats all the fuss about making a bale? stop and tie it before full capacity. then dump it out. trying to figure out what your getting at?

There are some of us that know nothing about balers like those. I would not have known if you could make and eject a small size bale or if you would have to leave that partial bale for the next year. I suppose it is just diameter that can be changed and not length of bale. first figure is length of bale? Second is max diameter? That you cannot go bigger than that figure?

Yes my Hesston 560 is a 5x6 , five feet wide buy up to 6 feet tall . You can vary the diameter but not the length

I have the newer version that baler, BR7070
If it has Auto-Wrap there's a adjustment on the right side for the bale size you want.
On my old 640 it was adjusting a clevis, on the newer one it's moving a spring cling to a different hole a rod.
If it has net wrap with Bale Command you set the bale size on the monitor.
Even though mine will also make a 4x6 bale I normally set it for a 4x5 or 4x5.5.

If you think you'll stay with 4x4 bales look around for a 640, 644, 648, they will make up to a 4x5 bale and are not as tall as the 650 series, this allows them to be stored in smaller sheds and it cost less to replace belts due to their shorter length.
