I have a question for you pullers out there. We have a pull once a year with stock tractors under 60 horse and no more than 10,000 lbs.We were wondering what works best for the track, clay, sand,or a combo of some sort.We tried some 3/4 roadmix compacted but that soon got loosend up and no one was getting any distance.I appreciate any input on this matter, thanks.Ron

Hard compacted clay works best. You can roll it between classes too. If dry have a water truck/tank wet the track a little and it will compact well.

Clay with some top soil mixed into it, with enough water to keep it pliable. All clay will eventually turn into concrete or turn into dust depending on the moisture level and the tractor horsepower. Your best chance of success is to get someone local who builds tracks for the local club or pulling organization to help you.

It depends on what your mix of pullers is. If you have mostly stock guys they won't care if the track gets a little beat up and gets hills in it. If you want to cater to the guys that have spent real money to get more power out of their tractors so that they will be sure to win, you want a good hard clay track. A softer track keeps the guys with more power from being able to get their power to the ground. The stock guys won't be made to look foolish and they will be more likely to come back next year.

An aside. Just watched some Pulling. Some very expensive looking units (wondered 'How much'). Boy howdy ! can those suckers ever pound carbon into the atmosphere !

Sandy soil not ideal. Solid clay not either. A mixture of dirt and clay, enough moisture to keep it together, and a track crew that that can keep the track worked and consistent is best. Don't want a mud pit but don't want a dust bowl either. A good track crew is as important as track material.

Thanks to all of you, this gives me some good info we have access to some guys with heavy equipment to rebuild our track. All we have in between pulls is a tractor with a box spreader but we haven't been compacting it.

Our clubs track is mostly clay with some sand and can get hard. If it gets to dry we have a tank of water and water it down between classes.
Top photo is my Allis Chalmers WD45 and club members Farmall M on our track.
