Massey Got a Workout Today

Spent a few hours running the flail today. The owner of this property didn't want it cut til after the 4th, so it wouldnt interfere with the "wildlife". It made Massey grunt occasionally.

Wow, that?s a heck of a work out for the Massey and the mower, would hate to have to keep that stuff mowed down

That would need 2 passes with my flail on the Oliver. One pass set way high and a second pass to cut it to a couple inches. No way would it do it in one pass.

not many flail mowers around here, do they pull easier then a bushhog ????? that looks like some tough work

From what I've read, a flail should take more horsepower.

I have mowed this in the past with a rotary chopper. I don't think the flail pulls any harder, and its a foot wider.

I think the end result looks better than my rotary also.

Not real sure. This section is pretty wet in the spring. Its kind of a flood plain for a creek.

Definitely some tall, wide bladed stuff.

I'm pretty impressed with what this flail will do.

I put all new knives on it last year. They are sharpened all the way up to the attachment point. That is supposed to keep stuff from wrapping the drum and I assume it also helps shred everything up.

That looks like Sudex grass. We use to green chop sudex and feed feed it cattle. We pulled a John Deere 15 A chopper with a John Deere A and it handled nice.

Looks like there may be some Reed Canarygrass in that. Having wet feet would also lean that direction. Dad put some on our pasture 35 years ago and after a couple years it finally took, with a vengance. Spreads very well on wet ground.

Anyhow it made it over to the old cattle lot where we wintered animals and I mow it a couple times a year. It is some of the toughest cutting stuff I have ever run into. 5 foot bushhog pulls a 3020 deere hard. 15 foot stalk cutter will bring a 130 horse tractor to it's knees.

Not in my experience. I've pulled 5 foot versions of both with my tractor and the brush hog uses less HP. The flail shreds everything up much more fine than the brush hog.
