O/T I hate when that happens........

Two and a half years ago when our county was in need of a new Highway Superintendent, I was instrumental in appointing a 33 year old young lady to the position.

She didn't disappoint me. If anything, I under-estimated her. When you're in on a conversation between a 33 year old female Highway Supt. and a 64 year old male Road Foreman and it's obvious that he considers her the boss, you know things are going well.

Now she resigned for family considerations and is moving to Colorado. Today is her last day. We've already had our parting conversation. But I sure hate to see her go, just when we were getting a handle on a department that had been neglected and mismanaged for 20 years.

My daughter was county administrator for nearby county. Old board hired her to come in here and straighten this place out. Do what ever you have to as long as it's legal. They want'ed her to do all the dirty work and they would take the credit. They want'ed her to be "the wind beneath their wings" That was fine with my daughter. They backed her in everything she did. Next election all the disgruntled employees voted in new board. Fired my daughter on first business day after election. She sued county and won large settlement. So now the whole county residents are mad at her.

Good people are hard o keep. I am happy for the young lady. She just goes to show you that there are good young people.

The one thing also about this. I have often wondered how this effects a woman's career??? The age when your advancing up through the ranks is also the age when you are having kids. My daughter career will not be effected too much as she is a nurse. If your in management I think it would really hurt or delay your advancement.

Sometimes it rough to do the right thing. I would say that's what happens when the patients are put in charge of the mental institution.

(quoted from post at 19:58:54 07/06/18) State handles the county roads in VA I can't imagine what a political mess it'd be if it was each county handling things.

In Ohio we have state roads, county roads, township roads, and also private roads. As long as everyone knows what they are responsible for it works out OK. When you get to snow plowing season you often can tell who is the better road maintainer.

And the county residents are too stupid to see that it is their fault for allowing the new board to get elected.
Because they sat at home and still did not bother to cast a vote, not even by mail.

It's not bad in my county. The county is perfectly square, 24 miles square with 16 precincts. A motor grader and operator are assigned to each precinct, with the county controlling it all.

I don't know how it is in the western part of the state. Cherry County, Nebraska alone covers more land area than the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. I suspect it's a whole different ball game out there.

What you have said about the career vs the job rings true around here. I have noticed that the women do not stay very long in these positions as compared to the guys...

If she worked for the county for 2 years she was probably already elgible for a good retirement pension so she's retired.

I won't even dignify that crack with a reply, other than to say our retirement plan is a 401k like everyone in the private sector. And it amazes me that the people who are the most critical of government are the least informed.
