I didn't see a forum for welding so I'm going ask here ....

What would be a good penetration ROD for steel 1/4 or little thicker ?? the steel
will be clean ... what I have to weld , I know the one pc. is 1/4 wall but not sure
how thick I will be welding too .. thinking it's 5/16 or 3/8's ..

THIS is for a STICK welder that is AC - DC and goes to 250 ..

THANKS for any information you want to share ....... mark

myself i would be using 1/8" 7018 rods. lots of times i will run 1/16 for the first pass . plus depends on what type of steel your talking about. plus have it tapered for the welds. just my way but real welders can give more info.

Depends I usually do 6010 root cover by 7018-8018 it's all preference set right and beveled nice it will do just fine with 7018 -6010-6013-about anything

My go to rod is most always 7018. But for mild steel anything you have will work. I would use whatever you are used to and can get the best weld with.

Just came up from the shop welding. I was using 6013 for a joint I wanted strong.
I usually make quite a few passes and clean well between each pass. For extreme strength, I use 7018 and use several passes.

Go for the 7018 rod. You will need to keep it in a dry location. If 7018 is used professionally it is stored in a warming oven to keep the moisture out of it. I don't have a warming oven to store my rod. I will put the rod in the kitchen oven, with SWMBO's approval of course, for an hour or so at 150F to drive out the moisture.

For thicker metal.after 'V'ing,I like to make a root pass with 6011.Really burn it in.Peen/grind the slag and fil with 7018.Peen slag after each pass.I use 1/8" rod.As was said,Damn hard to beat 7018.

what kind of joint are you welding? groove, fillet, etc, what will be the stress level in the pieces ?

6010 or 6011 will dig in deeper than 7018. For a strong weld, I use 6011 then cap it with 7018.

7014 will be much easier to weld with for the novice welder and have the same strength as the 7018. Will weld both vertical and horizontal. Easier to clean the slag off from also. I have burned boxes of both rods over the last 45-50 years. Not saying I am any expert just telling about a different rod that is easy for anybody to use.

Perhaps you should read this on the different rods. Basically the higher the number the stronger the weld. We just don't know what you are making. https://www.millerwelds.com/resources/article-library/stuck-on-stick-easy-answers-to-not-so-simple-questions-about-common-electrodes

I use 6010 or 7010 1/8 for the root, and 1/8 or 5/32 7018 for the fill depending on how big an area to fill. use a grinder with a buffing wheel on to clean after each pass. if you see any slag or pin holes in each pass grind them out clean and on to your next pass.

I don't think we're building the space shuttle here fellas. 1/8" 7018 rod with the welder set somewhere between 125 and 140 Amps, DC, electrode positive, will be plenty good enough.

6011 for the penetration, sloppy rod, but penetrates and holds. Otherwise 7018 for everything else for a nice looking, strong weld, minimum spatter, any position. ? isn't all that thick.....7018 on second thought.

Welded verticle seams, building tanks for CBI, with 6010..Would 'sew' in the first pass and then fill it out to just past flush..On the inside would arc gouge to clean metal..usually just barely skimming the seam...If done right a grinder would work just a well.
