Not for the cows anyway. There's a sewer system for two lakes here in the township. The ponds are out behind the college, three miles north of me as the crow flies. The guy who runs the whole thing is on board of review with me. He said there was some alfalfa under the pivots north of the ponds and asked me back in March if I wanted to cut it. I called him last week and asked if anybody had cut it. He said no,go ahead and cut it if I wanted to. He said he was up there right then and said to come up and look at it. I'd just gotten out of the shower and told him I'd just go up today and cut it. He left the gates unlocked for me this morning.

When I got up there,I didn't see any alfalfa. All there was was canary grass, yellow nutsedge, canadian thistle, kocia and cat tails. The worst of it was the ruts. There are four single tower pivots and four big circles, some of them more than knee deep. I walked out there and found those, got right back in the cab, drove out, locked the gates and left. I appreciate the offer, but no thanks.

can you just imagine the fun you'd have dropping a wheel into one of those ruts  taking the time to do a quick walk around a strange field you have never been in is a wise move.

Kind of like the "hay field" I was given to cut by the owner when I saw him down at the restaurant. Turned out to be a horse pasture, with the only grass being in the patches where they poop and won't eat the grass. Thanks but no thanks.

I have looked at "hay fields" that people have offered just to get them mowed and it is usually a slough hole or blow sand covered with weeds. Not really fit for anything. It never hurts to take a look though.

I've had a few offers like that before. Just had a gal over the hill offer me about fifteen acres. The best piece belonged to her neighbor. About 6 acres. Another piece was about 3 acres- straight up and down hill..and another 6 acre piece in two fields- er- swamps. She's still trying to find some idjit to cut rake and bale it for 1/2......

Had a guy come to me and said his future son-in-law got a different job and couldn't put up his 7 acres of hay this year. That makes you wonder right there. I had been by it a lot and it didn't look too bad. Get some fertilizer to put on it, and find its only six acres and it includes a lagoon, water well, power pole, tree and a steep terrace. He is giving me the hay or I would of said no.
