Going to Makinak (sp) island

The wife and I try to slip away for a few days each summer and last evening I asked her where she wants to go this year. That was her answer, so in a few days since the first cutting is done we're gonna head up that way. Going from Ohio what are some of the places of interest that we should also stop and see? Oh by the way, I made it through the first cutting without a trip to the hospital, the Kubota with cab sure made a BIG difference with my breathing in this 90+ heat. Keith

Ditto on the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI
Frankenmuth, MI, crowded on weekends.
Maybe Holland, MI or Chicago, Il on the return trip.

Tawas point on the east side. Mackinaw city is nice on the north end. Coming down the west side. Petoskey, Traverse city, Sleeping Bear dunes. Ludington, Grand Haven, South Haven. All nice places to see. South Haven, Traverse City and Sleepy Bear dunes are my favorites.

Ah yes, horse crap and fudge island. lol

Hartwick Pines is right on your way. Up by Grayling right after 127 and 75 merge together. Old growth pines forest. It's not what it used to be since they "modernized" it,but close enough to the freeway to make it worth the stop. If you want to stop in here on your way back, give a shout. I'll link up my email. It's a nice drive down Michigan's Route 66 to get here. If you ask nice,I might let you help me clean up the Oliver 500 and get it ready to paint. lol

If your coming down through the Kalamazoo area, Gilmore car museum is top notch and then their is the Kalamazoo air museum. too. Check out the Gilmore web page. Gilmore has a tractor show there once a year or so which means you get to the tractor show and the museum for one price. I think it's 12 bucks.

Go across the bridge to St Ignace. Nice little downtown to walk along the water and you can get to the Island from there also. Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City. The drive along the west coast on 31 is time consuming but very pretty.

We went there about 20 years ago in October. Nice place. Dining was $$$ as I recall. We stopped at Frankenmuth on the way up and visited the giant Christmas store.

I 2nd suggestions on Frankenmuth, tawas, hartwick pines and then running down west side of the state on your return. However, I like to add that once you are in the upper peninsula, head north to tequamana (sp) falls and then a little north and west to grand Marais and munising area. Town is wonderful, lake superior views are gorgeous including pictured rocks, and several other sites to see. Enjoy your vacation!

A friend was up that way last year and he talked about a copper mine on the upper paninsal that was interesting,, I would like to go up that way too..

Ditto on the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners. They have the National Model A permanent museum and others there. A fantastic place!

Years ago the Ford museum was good, just a few years later trash, No more would I go back, The village was never good. Don't wast your time on either. I liked Holland, Mi and would not mind going back but it will not happen.

Ditto on Henry Ford; they now call it The Henry Ford - museum, The Henry Ford - Village, The Henry Ford - factory tour, etc. Well worth visiting, stopped there last Fall.
Also in Grand Rapids, the Frederick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture park (has a nice farm house, barns, bronze animals). And one of the worlds largest bronze horse sculptures.

A couple of them I thought of while I was moving bales. There's a place just a few miles south west of Grayling called Wellington Farms USA. They've tried to replicate a working farm from the 30s. They have special events all year long,so check their website and see if there's anything going on when you'll be in the area. A fair amount of old machinery around, including some wooden threshers.

There's Call of the Wild museum up that way too. It's moved since I went there as a kid and I'm not sure where it is up there now,but just one of those roadside attractions that's fun to check out. I don't know if the Fred Bear Museum is still there in Gaylord or not. Worth checking to see.

Gilmore car museum, Henry ford museum, sleeping bear dunes, fort in mackinac, soo locks, casinos, traverse city is a nice area. Pictured rocks, taquaminon falls. Some of these are north of the bridge and an hour or 2 drive, but you're almost there.
