super c axle cracked

been rebuilding a Farmall super for my next door neighbor, upon further notice I notice that the axle was welded on and when taking off the seal hubs I noticed there were cracks running inside along the axle housing. I have seen many of these old type tractors brazed or welded on the undercarriage or on the axles.is this a common thing that happens to these type of tractors, I don't know if these axle housings weren't built as beefy as some of the JD tractor 4020 3020 etc.

Assuming you are not talking about the actual axle with the wheel clamped to it, but the axle housing. They can break, but it takes having the wheels
extended very wide and then loading the tractor beyond reason. A crash or roll over can also stress them enough to crack. If you replace it don;t be
concerned it will happen again. Jim

I agree with Jim. I once owned an "A" IH with a broken/brazed axle housing casting. Wondered how that happened.

But there are folks out there that could ^%$& up an anvil with a rubber mallet.

As said, if you are talking about the
housing rather than the actual axle,
they usually get broken due to some
type accident. I fixed a couple where
tractors got loose and ran into a tree
or something. In that case a brazed
repair will last til the next
accident. If it's the axle I've never
seen that before. The good news is
there are used parts easily available.
