milking bull

Milking Shorthorn is considered good for milk and beef. I grew up around a herd of them and they are quite gentle, unlike a beef herd of Angus or Hereford.

That's the breed we raised in the early 50's.

And we hand milked the cows, but not the bull.

Until a bolt of lightning killed all 24 head one night. They were all bedded down near the tree that got hit.

Not a happy day on the farm.

True story. My dad was a dairy farmer, and his "city" sister was visiting. He announced after breakfast that he was going to go look at a milking shorthorn bull. City sister said, "But Ray, how can that be?" That became a tag line in the family, whenever someone would say something illogical.
