Tractor stuck in reverse

Remove the transmission oil fill plug and use a big screwdriver or small prybar to slide the gears back to a neutral position. You shouldn't need to use to much force to move them. It's been a long time since I had to do this so I don't remember which gear to move, but being stuck in reverse you most likely need to move one of the sliding gears forward.
Obviously don't have the tractor running when you do this!

Place the Hi-Lo lever in the center, start position with engine OFF. This removes any gear tension. As mentioned, remove the oil fill plug and use a long bar to move the first-reverse gear FORWARD. When the main shift lever will move cross wise, you are done. DON'T shift FAST from first to second and it will never happen again. When doing that shift lever gets to the 2-3 slot, but the first-reverse will over-shoot the neutral position and go into reverse, even though the lever is in the 2-3 slot. Remember, it ain't a HURST!!

I had one for many years usually locks up going from 2-3 never had one stick in reverse. Remove the oil fill next to shifter. Reach in with a long bar or screwdriver first and second was on left cant remember where reverse was. If you replace the spring on shift lever usually cures problem for a while.

Just what they said below. I carry a long adjustable wrench in my Massey tool box just in case. Open plug and pry with one tool. Happens about once a year, but always far away in the timber.
There was a great Massey guy on here years ago that had a neat little website with Massey tips etc. I think he passed away and I'll bet the site is gone. Dean?? He explained why it happens. Has to do with how you pull the shifter.

The advice someone gave me is to keep downward pressure on the shift lever when changing gears. I still manage to get mine hung up once or twice a year. I just hope it doesn't happen when I'm pushing limbs into my brush pile fire with my box blade. TDF

Listen to Dieseltech and Two Dogs. It happened to me sometimes but since I learned many years ago to shift not too fast and with a down pressure on the lever it has only happened once.
