1954 Ford NAA

Needs some help! I recently bought a 1954 NAA. She ran a rough
and looked worse. It took me several months to fix all the things
broke or Jerry rigged by the previous owners. Finally got her back
together and fired it off and now it smokes like a tar kettle (blue-
White). It?s smokes out the tail pipe, valve cover breath and the
crank case breaker. What would cause all this. I was told to work it
hard and see if it cleared up... three hours of mild bush hog work
burned 2 quarts of oil! Any Ideas and or is this a total engineer
rebuild???

Finally got her back
together.." It would be helpful to know what you took apart & put back together.
 
Sounds like typical symptoms of an engine needing a rebuild.

Unless it sat with a stuck engine, continued running will not likely improve the situation.
 
old- I have a question????

If the rings are stuck and it was smoking this badly as he continued to run the engine....wouldn't the stuck rings "score" the cylinder walls so bad that a rebuild was necessary?
 
A lot of times the stuck rings sit in tightly so they do not hold tight to the cylinder walls letting oil get past them which in turn causes oil burning. Not often do they score cylinders walls unless they break due to being stuck
 
Thanks, in some of my rebuilds the 'Lands' were so bad that I had to use a ring groove cleaner to get the gunk out!
 
I any rebuild where you going to reuse the piston one should always clean the ring groves or you can have rings that will not fit as they should and then can break and in turn cause major engine problems
 
check the compression. then work it as hard as it will and even cover the rad to get it hot.for a few HRS. need to get the rings to seat into the cyl's ,could be glazed from running cold and idling around. unless they are just plain worn out. then check compression again.maybe even giving it some sniffs of water from a spray bottle while under load could help. sounds to me like you have a worn out engine. plus read the plugs when doing compression test, that tells a big story right there.
 
Run a compression test and then squirt some oil in each cylinder and test again. If compression goes up, good possibility that the rings are shot. Chris
 

Here what I did:

Change fluids
New water pump
New Valve cover gasket
New radiator and shroud
New plugs. wires, cap and electronic ignition
new exhaust
new carb
rewired all electrical system
new gauges
new steering wheel
painted top to bottom
new freeze plugs (full of rust)
welded a 6inch crack in the block (nickel rods)

She sat for six months and didn't smoke when I pulled it into the shop. It did run really rich (reason for new carb).
 

Just an FYI it blows oils out of the Crank breather, valve-cover breather and the tail pipe. (One good thing, none of my implements will ever rust!)


I tried to bush hog before the new "Tapping sound" as of yesterday. It used two quarts of oil (20w50)in 3 hours of running. when at the top of the hash marks on the dipstick it registered 35psi.

Several people Know said it wouldn't hurt to ruin it, now I have a "tapping" sound in with #1 or #2 cylinder. The overhaul just become a solid reality! I've got 3k in it now, not sure how much more I'm willing to go.
 

I tried that, it's got tap/knock in cylinder 1 or 2. I'm temped to drop the oil again and put son Lucas stop leak in it.

ps all, I did run a can of seafood trough in the first tank.
