GE (to raise debt coverage cash is selling off divisions. The sale, to the private equity firm Advent International, includes GE's Jenbacher and Waukesha brands as well as manufacturing plants in the United States, Canada and Austria. I didn't know Wakashaw made Gensets. Jim

I have done a hood bit of work at the Erie PA train plant and Grove City engine plant. They build GE branded motors for alot of things. The most popular are for locomotives and marine use. At one piont about 10 years ago they were looking into the generator market for islands in the south Pacific powered by palm oil. We did about a year's worth 5 or 6 men, of work in the engine lab test cells for Palm oil testing. THE TEST LASTED 4 HOURS AND WAS SCRAPPED.

It was announced recently that the locomotive division was sold or partially sold to an outfit called Wabco. Over the last few years the workforce in the Erie plant has shrank by a bout half down to 1500 os so. It was 13000 in the early 80s. Alot of folks think they have been closing the Erie plant for years.

Actually it's called Wabtech which stands for Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies.

The ES44AC 4400 hp diesel locomotive was being built in Ft. Worth, Tx. and the plant was fixing to shut down when the Canadians (Canadian Northern) ordered 500 (as I recall the Ft. Worth Star Telegram article) which kept it open for awhile longer. The article caught my attention as I have a BNSF N scale in my train layout. Beautiful beast.

They were all built in Erie until about 6-7 years ago when the Texas plant opened up. There is a huge decline in locomotive orders right now for domestic use. That is all they make at that plant The main thing keeping the Erie plant going is the foriegn market. They make some strange looking locos narrow gauge etc. It's pretty cool to have been there and seen all of them being built.

GE has been in trouble for a while as evidenced by being kicked off the Dow average and replaced by Walgreens, of all things. That had to sting.

When I found out about the Erie plant, I google mapped Erie and found the plant. Gave it a good looking over on the highest resolution google would give me. Wink!
