Are there any individuals or businesses that repair the voltage regulators that are part of the old 6 or 12 Volt generator charging systems?

I realize that for the relatively low cost of a new one, repair probably isn't practical.

Some of the older service manuals had detailed instructions on how to adjust and tune voltage regulators. A good service manual might still cost several times that of a replacement voltage regulator.

If the windings are burnt & smell bad, it is replacement time. If not, I can clean the points & set them up to work again.

The new regulators for $20-$30 are junk. Last one I bought lasted 10 minutes. Found a NOS Delco on Evilbay and it's working fine.
One thing to remember is regulators are polarity sensitive. They will work both ways simply by polarizing the generator, but a positive ground regulator won't last long term, especially the cheap made in China/India ones.

There is a company called Flight Systems. I know they repair control systems. Not sure what all they do. But I have used them for years. Good folks that know what they are doing. At a good price.

Something that will contribute to short regulator life is a field winding drawing too much amperage.

If the problem continues a good rebuilder can check it for you.

You can still get good VR's, but you are going to have to go to a real repair outlet to get one. Expect to pay in the $60-80 range or more for a less common VR.

As was said below, a Delco 10SI alternator solves a lot of problems and can often be repaired for under $15.00.

I was talking with the owner of the auto electric shop a couple days ago. He was telling me about adjusting a VR to put out 8 volts. He does it on the bench, and he said that it takes a while of trial and error because the adjustment is far from linear. Tweak a tiny bit, voltage jumps a lot. Turn it down five times to get it to reduce at all.
