What Hydraulics, Some of the first hydraulics were run off oil pumps.

Seals were the weak point in hydraulic cylinder design until about 75-80 years ago when synthetic rubber and plastics began to improve.

There were no hydraulics. No pumps, valves or cylinders to work with. Only mechanical drives.
