Starting problems JD 2750

Have the worst kind of electrical problem: intermittent. My JD 2750 tractor starts sometimes and not others. When one turns the key, the solenoid clicks and occasionally, the tractor starts. you can start it by shorting the posts on the solenoid, every time. Just to be sure, I have replaced the solenoid with one bought from YT since and it makes no differenc. In previous repairs I have replaced the starter switch and neutral safety switch (PO had bypassed it and the switch wires were ratty). The solenoid shows 12.7 v when the START switch is turned but does not fire. The NSS works (no voltage with starter key when in gear) everything else electrical is working, the same result: won't start (just clicks) most of the time and about every 10th try will start. Runs fine, alternator has been rebuilt and is charging.

Any ideas?

Double check all battery cable connections and make sure there good tight and bright. Or you may have a bad battery cable. They do go bad and you cannot see if it is bad or not and even most tests will not tell you if they are bad

When you replaced the solenoid, did you take the starter off, disassemble, clean and inspect everything?

Could be a mechanical binding keeping the drive from sliding freely on the shaft.

But since it always starts by jumping the terminal at the starter, probably voltage drop from the starter switch, neutral switch, and the wiring in between. You can add a relay down by the starter. Come off the battery post, to the relay, back to the energizer terminal of the solenoid with #10 wire. Then energize the relay with the original start wire.

Starter works fine on direct short Haven't pulled starter (behind loader mount )tried a jumper straight from key switch to solenoid and still wouldn't work. Suggests voltage drop is before starter switch. If we used the relay, what size/type relay would you suggest? Please note that we can start by shorting across solenoid terminals now.

I have several tractors like that and they weren't all green. After trying several things I finally put another relay near the solenoid. I fed direct battery power to it with 12ga wires or bigger and triggered it with the start wire from the original. So far it has worked.

Has negative battery cable connection been relocated from rusty battery box to starter mounting bolt?? JD offered a field install relay kit that will provide more volts/amps to engage starter solenoid. You can make your own harness & utilize a solenoid older Ford Cars/trucks utilized.

I prefer the Ford fender mount type, used for many years back in the 60's-80's. They have a heavy duty mount (which serves as the ground), weather resistant, heavy terminals.

Or a cube relay, 50A or so. But they are somewhat fragile, plastic case, push on terminals can vibrate loose.

Either will work.

This looks like the ticket. Do you have the rest of the diagram, that is what the numbers refer to ? or any more info about the Deere fix?

Thanks for the useful replies. I seemed to have solved the problem by simply putting in new wires from heavy duty push button switch which was in the useful junk box to neutral safety switch to solenoid. Starts well. If this does not work, I will add a relay. Ready to mow hay here in Vermont

I bet you have an oxidized contact in the fuse panel and your starter relay is not being energized. Find which fuse powers the relay and wiggle it while you try to crank it. Have a 2355 that had the same symptoms a couple years ago.
