Mr Janicholson please, 450 disc brake clearance

I am going to look at the neighbor's brakes on his 450 today. I am going to attempt to turn the brake housings on my lathe. I think you had suggested measuring from the outside of the disc to the mounting surface and then adding .06(?)to get a good working clearance. Or was it .03?

Putting the friction disks, and the expander into the housing (turned up on the bench flat)and measuring from a straight edge down to the disk, there should be more than .045" and less than .060". If it is more, machine the housing so the numbers are inside that range. Jim

Thank you Jim, The disc s were stuck to the splined shaft. The pin that pulls the two halves together, was rusted tight in the clevis and nothing could move. When you stepped on the brake the tire locked up. There was a hand full of dirt in the bottom of the housing. I got everything free d up and I will measure the clearance tomorrow. The friction disc are worn to the point that each disc is missing one or more of the grooves. The balls are in poor shape and the ramps are rusty. I am going to apply some powdered graphite to the shaft and the balls tomorrow. He would like to get a smaller tractor and so I do not think he is inclined to do more than getting the brakes to work better. I doubt that I will turn the housing.
I adjusted the points and both of us noticed that it ran much more smoothly.

if it has .130" or more it will be tough to get it to work well. The angle of pull on the links that attach to the expander get to a position that is not mechanically good enough. Best of luck on the fix. Jim
