John Deere identification, please educate me

I found these pics of what is listed as a John Deere tractor for sale. My question is it a tractor, or a crawler someone has modified, or did it come this way from the factory. I am not a JD guy and have no clue with what they put out years ago, but found it interesting.

Looks like Tim has a relative. My guess would be a modified 40. Not enough detail to tell if it was a crawler or wheel tractor.

To me, it looks like it was a crawler, M or 40 series since there is no steering wheel and the rear looks more crawler like. Someone has taken off the tracks and put on wheels and a different front end, even having a heavy chain that appears to drive the front wheels. Definitely not factory, but very innovative and interesting.

It?s for sale by Waterloo on kijiji, the guy wants 4000 CDN, but I never got a response from them about info on it and was curious.

If it's done right and works well, it might be a fair price for an interesting unit,. If it's a cobbled together misfit, well, better off there...

It started life as a crawler,it has crawler steering clutches and final drives. It looks like somebodys home made version of a skid steer.Never saw anything quite like it before though.

I would say it's a 40 crawler with drive wheels on it,,it is interesting,,and I would say it has a chance of working well,,looks like a #100 roller chain driving the front wheels..
