Reading Riverslim about craigs list makes me ask. I decided to sell my 49 chev one ton. The one I showed pict of while back. With problems with craig's list and other scamsI really wonder just how to list. I did try on trucks on yesterdays tractors however there is very little activity on that forum. Even local paper gets many scams. What would some of you fellows recommend?? There is a local radio call in but have had no luck their as very limited site. Have any of you folks used Hemming's??

Do it like we used to. Park it in front with a "For sale" sign with the price plainly listed.Take out an add in the local shopper and/or local newspaper.

I have had very good luck with Craigslist. Yes there are some people that try to scam you but they are pretty easy to spot and you can eliminate a lot of them by not taking any communication other than direct phone calls. The scams will be emailed or texted. Also just state you will only take payment in person. Meaning they have to hand it to you personally. That takes out the majority of any scammers.

As for payment: well cash works for me. Also I use direct bank transfers. You go to your bank and the buyer provides the routing and account numbers for your bank to do a direct transfer. 100% safe. This might be called a wire transfer at your bank. I do not take any non-local checks. Locals checks must clear before anything leaves.

I would use local facebook market place. Seems to be the way to go and you get feedback rather than just no responses if your outta line with your pricing. CL isn't bad either, and normally the scams are easy to detect. If you truck is a pick up (sorry I didn't see the picture) then you should get plenty of hits. The commercial stuff can be found pretty cheap. In short, everything has scams, cash is the only way I've ever dealt with private sales unless I have a previous relationship with the person. Most honest people understand this.

I've sold a few things on Craigslist, you can usually tell if it's someone trying to scam you. Fast talking calls or poorly written messages. Also, if you advertise anything, CASH ONLY.

I have sold a number of things on Craigs List. Home phone only, land line. No cell phone or e-mail. Put a good description, good pictures and a reasonable price. A good buyer will come along. Bad listings with poor photos, missing information or high prices drive away the good buyers leaving only the bad buyers or scammers.

The other thing that turns me off when reading a listing is someone giving BS information about how easy a fix it is and it will run perfect. The standards line; "It ran perfect last week and won't start today. I am sure all it needs is a spark plug but I don't have time to fix it." When I read that I think idiot seller and I won't waste my time.

I sold a Grand Cherokee that had a rusted out link on the front axle. I stated NOT DRIVEABLE and what was wrong with it along with pictures. I got several replies within hours and sold it in a couple of days.

I've sold things on Craigslist but only things small enough to carry. I don't like the idea of having the buyer come to my house, so always arrange to meet in front of the sheriff's office. The sheriff's office has a couple spots in the parking lot marked for this type of deal. So far, so good.

I have sold many items on CL and will second the cash only. That eliminates a lot of scammers right there. If someone wants my item bad enough they will find a way to get cash.

I, too, use CL a good bit. Just be careful. I always put "Call ONLY " in my ads. Has worked fairly well so far. Scammers and spammers don't seem to want to talk 1 on 1. After a while you can recognize a scam reply. Just by how they are worded usually.

No email turns off a lot of good buyers as well. Somw like me cannot hear good enough to do dealing over the phone. You can tell just as much about a buyer on an email as a phone call. I have not tried to call on several items that were within my price and range to get there but would not attempt a call that I was almost positive that I would not be able to understand a word they were saying. I have never sold anything on craigs list. And I have had sellers that I gave up on because they would not try to answer my questions.

I buy and sell on CL and your right, "call only" ads get ignored.
Especially the "call and leave a message, will call you back" ads.
And throw in "no texts" to those ads that will lose out on potential buyers.

But I guess if you insist on "calls only" and you eliminate buyers that can't or dislike to call your only cutting your own throat with your paranoia.

So then I call and make a lowball offer because the likely hood of competing with other buyers for the item is less.

"No email turns off a lot of good buyers as well. Somw like me cannot hear good enough to do dealing over the phone."

Along with the hearing problem, there's the timing problem.
I buy and sell on CL all the time, but I work the early day shift.
Folks who work second or third shift can't reach me at home during my waking
hours and need another option other than waiting until the weekend.
Email or text also gives them a way to request additional photos of particular areas of interest.
I'm not running in circles for them, nor would I ask them to if they were the seller,
but having an optional way of communication widens the net for both buyer and seller.

Your close enough to Indy, advertise in all the CL towns from your place into Indy.
Then wade thru the responses in the manner of your choice.

Join the forums over on Stovebolt.com . They have a section called the swap meet where you can advertise your truck. That site is strictly dedicated to Chevy trucks, so plenty of enthusiasts there.

I also do not have a phone capable of texting or know how to do that. Email comes in a a tower computor and phone is a land line that is also a captioning phone for hearing impaired.

I just bought a Craigs list tractor. Arranged to meet the seller, stopped by the bank on the way, moved some money to my checking account, took the records with me, showed the seller the paperwork, he took my personal check, checked today and check cleared the bank and that was that.

I have used direct, electronic transfer before and other than the 20 bucks to do it, a walk in the park and as safe as you can get.

On scammers, I noticed some offerings on the list that very well could have been, or just a lazy seller. My luck was I didn't have to worry about a tractor half way across the country and all associated with that. The beauty I found was within 50 miles and fit on my trailer that accompanied me when I went to see it.

On the "lazy seller" thing, if he's lazy at selling his stuff, what else is he derelict in doing......fluid changes for one? Not interested in his merchandise.
