6.4 Powerstroke Oil Question

Boss asked me a question today, didn't have an exact answer but told him I would find out...

His '08 F350 6.4 Powerstroke, said since getting the oil changed at Firestone he noticed the oil light stays on longer on start up and there is a deep knock until the light goes off. The oil level is good.

I'm thinking oil filter drain back.

Is there a check valve in the filter itself?

A check valve elsewhere?

Or is it just an air lock that keeps the canister full?

Or is this a sign of pending doom?

Thanks!

maybe should find out if they put proper 15-40 diesel oil in it, or some cheap 5-20. then you will knock the brgs. out. never know what these kids put in!probably dont know the difference between a gas engine or diesel engine.

I am a strong believer of using OEM filters in motors that are worked hard. I would also second the other poster about what kind of oil was used.

I would bet that the Firestone place is using a cheaper bulk oil not a diesel specific oil. I can not see them changing many diesel vehicles.

i'd change the filter first, I lost nearly all my oil pressure once after oil change, may not be the problem but it's the cheapest place to start

To answer your question yes, 3C3Z6800A anti drain valve. If you use a FORD 3C3Z6731AA filter of the correct length when the filter is removed the valve opens & drain the bowl. Too short of a filter allows oil to drain, or a faulty valve.

If it started right after oil change i would change again somewhere else. Probably the filter, i have had the same happen. Change filter and a was well. But change it all in a diesel. If they used a cheap filter more than likely they used cheap oil too.

As commented, change the filter first.
While there are countless vehicles on the road that run to 250K miles and have always had their oil changed at an Iffy Lube, those places use the cheapest filters available to them and I feel it's just not worth it.
My $.02.

rla, I see the 3C3Z6800A anti drain valve listed for 6.0 and 7.4, but not much mention for 6.4.

Is it the same?

Thanks!

Like others have said. Change that filter NOW. Replacement filters come in two flavors, some come with a new cap on it and some come with no cap. One is shorter than the other and will not seal inside.

... Or is this a sign of [im]pending doom?

Yes it is.

Like everyone else has said, replace that filter. Buy the Motorcraft. If the noise stops, pull the filter back out (allows oil to drain back to pan) and drain the pan. Replace filter, use a quality oil and hope that's the end of it.
