Hello, all.
I was in the bank this afternoon and an older couple (my age!) was dealing with the receptionist.
The gist of the conversation was someone from "Dish Network" called them and told them that unless
they did an electronic check for $1000 for system upgrades immediately they were going to lose their
service. And they did!! But for some reason they went to the bank and told them.
It sounded like they got it stopped (thank goodness), but they had to freeze their bank account and start a
new one.
So and new day and a new scam!!! I'm waiting for them to call me so I can play with them a bit!!!

Before I got old I had sympathy for old people who did stupid things like that. Now not so much. Who in their right mind would pay a TV service provider $1,000 to keep their service? Unless they don't know about DirectTV.

i know if I cash a check from somebody their bank can come right back and get the money. With scammers the bank seems to think it is just gone and they can't track it.

When you get a call like that tell them to mail you a letter. You will never get one. Or you can do what I do and tell them *#@!&*#! Lol😉

It's not just old folks, there's a guy here in town who was convinced 20 years or so ago that he'd won some foreign lottery that he never even bought a ticket for. It was all over town that he'd won the lottery and everybody was talking about his plans. Sandy at the bank tried to tell him right from day one that it was a scam, but he wouldn't listen.

Snake oil salesmen have been around forever. But the scams today are very sophisticated and technically complex. Most of us can not even adjust our heat pump system, so we are ripe for scams. It is odd that when the scammers are out in force, so many people want to reduce the laws against these crimes and rely on the local sheriff to deal with it. Heck, the local sheriff can't even operate all the gadgets in his squad car.

We ditched Direct TV years ago. Their prices went up every month, channels were dropped, and our complaints did no good. We told them to Kiss Off and went to Dish. Prices stable and we get the channels that we want.

A company in our industry got hit with Ransom Ware because someone clicked on a link. If they had just looked at the address they would not have clicked, the cost was 5 million.

It must've been about 4-5 years ago when my brother was dating a lady who runs a knick-knack store. The store also is an official Fed-Ex package pickup. You know, the type of store where you can mail a Fed-Ex package. She told us that a local farmer had come in to mail a package and when she asked him the worth of the package, he said it was worth $10,000. With a surprised look, she then asked him the contents of the package. Again, he said "$10,000".
Turns out the farmer had fallen for some kind of scam and it took her quite awhile before she finally convinced him that he was throwing, errr...., mailing his money down the drain.
Just a couple of months ago, a local farmer who is a good friend of mine was ready to send close to that amount to someone he had never met because there was a tractor ad on Craigslist that was too good to be true and he had to get his money sent off before "somebody else" would purchase it.
Only after a few people clued him in, that he got some sense knocked into his head. The fact I drilled into him was that everybody has a phone that can take a photo now a days, yet the person he was texting had no way of sending him a current photo of the tractor that was up for sale.

Our local cable service that I can drive 20 mile to and get help or just stop in every month, they remember customers by name. They had their own system for TV, satified with it and could get channels wanted. Thought it was to outdated and did not want to out the money into replacing system so they went with Dish, worst possible service as can no longer get the local channels for the local news. Had to pick one area either 20 mile north of me or 70 mile south of me. I chose the 70 mile south because they have better coverage of my area that stations that are closer. I wish both Dish and direct would be shut down, they are no good for the country. They are why I cannot any longer get all the local area stations I want for local news.

I love my brother in law's Dish network. Not only does he have 3 TVs with Dish on them but I can watch the programs on my phone or computer.

Life is good.

I get calls and Final Notices all the time for my last chance to get an extended warranty for my '04 F 250. If it covers squirrel damage at 100% I might.

Play if you want. I have been told with todays phone gadgets some scammers can keep you on phone long enough to some how gather information that can be used to gain access to many of your other information.

They play subliminal messages in the background while talking to you. It puts you in a hypnotic state. Then when they ask for the info they want, you end up blurting it out.
