Hey fellas- got a 1974 Deere 4230. When I pull a tag along spreader using both hyd remotes (1 for spinners, 1 for gate), the tractor will just stop in the field when fluid gets hot. Granny makes a whining sound. It won't move for a hour or so when it cools down, then its fine. Was told by a JD shop foreman it's the clutch, but it has planted 100 acres pulling a 15 ft 750 no till drill with no problems at all. Can't figure out what's going on. Any experts that can help? Thanks!

I would say your using a hydraulic motor setup that is not made for a closed center hydraulic system. So your over heating the hydraulic oil. You did not say whether you have a Quad range or power shift tractor. I am assuming a Quad range since your talking about a clutch. The perma clutch would NOT slip due to hot hydraulic oil. It uses a spring applied pressure plate and that is just cooled/lubricated with the hydraulic oil. Now the Hi-Lo cutch pack in front of the Quad range could be effected by hot oil or low pressure. This would make your tractor not pull itself. I will tell you if you due this much you will be repairing that clutch pack.

You need to fix or change what ever is causing the high pressure leak or incorrect hydraulic oil flow so the oil does not over heat.

I sure thought trans pump hyd pressure not springs engaged both traction & pto clutch operating pistons on a JD tractor with QR trans. If 4230 is a QR does it stop moving in both high & low speeds of the 2 speed?

I also agree problem needs to be determined & corrected before pulling spreader again

Hyd pressure engages the clutch and pto the only springs are
to insure release , has to be losing pressure somewhere
