I remember when I was a kid grandma always said
that lightening was attracted to things that were hot.
You had to make sure you were off the hot tractor if
lightening came cause it would get you.

As I got older I learned that metal, the tallest thing
around, and oppositely charged items
(grounded, etc) were all attractors of lightening but
never heard more about heat.

I always think of her this time of the year when I am
living in one tractor or another and last night had to
wonder if it were true. Was it just that the tractor
was tall and metal and the rest was a wives tale?

If it was, there are lots more. Never sleep under a
fan or you will get arthritis. Don?t ride your bike in
the heat or you will get polio. The list goes on.

I do believe certain trees are more prone to lightning, probably just a better conductor due to root structure.

My theory is lightening pretty much goes where it wants to.

Having traveled thousands of feet from the cloud to ground, or ground to cloud, the destination will not likely be diverted by a few inches of rubber, or the tallest tree, etc.

One time I just happened to be looking at the right place at the right time. There was a large backhoe parked in a muddy field at a construction site, the bucket on the ground, the mast in the air. Perfect lightening rod! Then it hit, but did not hit the mast, as far as I could tell. It did blow a steaming crater in the ground about 10 feet beside the tractor!

One can lessen their odds of being hit by using common sense, but still there is always a chance.

Hi, we had some huge cedars at our former residence. Several had scars from top to bottom on the bark, from lightning strikes. You could really hear it. Sounds like a car wreck. Ed Will Oliver BC
