Tractors .......in Parades.

Im sure some of you guys have been in parades with your "pride and joy tractors"... I have an "H" and an "A" ready to go but am looking for ideas on what to pull behind my tractor in a parade? Just seems more complete to me....and a "manure spreader" seems a bit tacky....so share your pics or ideas with me please. Thanks.

You would be amazed how much interest a manure spreader creates, especially if you can get a couple of local politicians to ride in it, or put a sign on the side that says "Caution, Political promises."

Hmmm, Memorial Day is coming up, how about a Veteran's float?

Or, the local high school band complete with pom-pom waving cheerleaders?

A wagon/'people hauler' with some special people.A 'political wagon' is always popular. It can be just about anything. The more unusual the better. An old plow.A binder, pulltype combine..........

A matching trailer to go with it. Something that looks like it could have come from the factory with the tractor. Would require some creativity. You could also get something like a WinPower tow behind generator and pull behind it. You don't see that too much.

Usually I don't pull anything in parades, but I have on occasion--maybe a wagon or plow, one time a 2 row planter. One time I pulled a 4H float with some kids on it and another time a wagon with a musical group.
The thing about hauling people is you have to watch the sudden starts and stops, which can occur during a parade. It's not bad if they're all sitting down, but if some are standing up, like those musicians, it's easy for them to lose their balance if you jerk it a little.
I also hate following someone that is throwing candy, as you never know when a kid is going to dart out in front of you. I've had one or two close calls over the years. I never throw candy myself, and I always leave a little bit of distance between me and the unit ahead of me.

I drove the Cockshutt 50 in my first parade last summer. Pulled the Case threshing machine. The same one I belted up to the 50 later that afternoon for a threshing demo. Worked out well. Third gear most of the way but you really have to watch for the guy in front of you stopping.

I pulled a Hoosier grain drill with my niece riding on it. I don't have any pictures handy. Ironically I'm going to load it up and take it to the local consignment sale in a couple weeks. The shed it's sitting in is starting to fall down and I don't have any other place to keep it in.

If you have never previously been in a parade I suggest you pull nothing the first time but of course that depends on the parade too, how big? where at? How many watchers. The only tractors that go a steady pace are the first few in line, the rest is speed up, slow down or stop go, stop go. Our local show parade goes through town and it is both heavily participated in and attended. Most participants throw candy and kids are darting around retrieving it and a person must be every attentive AND be able to stop. I had a young child dart right at a front tire once and it was a good thing I was pulling nothing and had good brakes. After that I always had a rider who watched one side and I watched the other. Not trying to over complicate a fun and simple act of driving in a parade but I wasn't prepared for what goes on in my first one.

Candy and kids go together. Have pulled a trailer for karate school in Christmas parade. Had a watcher on truck tool box. Had a child get between truck and trailer once. I could not see him, as I let off brake watcher banged on truck roof saving the day. Kids see friends and are pretty quick to get where they shouldnt be.

When we go to shows, they always have a parade. I try to have an implement on the tractor. Last time my Ford 960 had a plow. And cub had belly mower. Also have pulled a trailer. My wife stole my tractor in 1st picture. I was talking to several YTers at a show when parade started... She looked better on it than I do! Any implement will be fine,it also gets folks talking, remembering.

Good post, never gave that much thought actually. BUT I have experienced trying to back up a tractor with a basic pull-type wagon with a front center-pivoting axle and it wasn't a whole lot of fun. If in a parade and having to back up for whatever reason, it might be embarrassing.

If you have an unrestored version of your tractor, could put it on a trailer. Your tractor: "This is now" other tractor: "That was then"
Ja I tend to think outside the box and not all my ideas are home runs LOL

I too like to pull something. I usually snag a new implement every year but you cant go wrong with a good ol flare box wagon. I put a false bottom in and hand picked enough corn to make a mound. Since main street runs right to the elevator made a sign that said NOT A FLOAT. just hauling corn. Didn't win the best float contest. Can you believe that?

Good idea....I do have a spreader; would like to have a "buck board wagon" but are hard to find around here. Doubt I would get any
of our politicians in my spreader- but I agree. Thanks for all the comments on here- all good. Thanks guys!

I'm in ne Kansas, about 30 miles south of Topeka. I can get a picture but won't be till at least this afternoon or tomorrow morning.

We have a local person who owns a swimming pool, she brings a pontoon fishing boat that I pull with my tractor, they decorate the pontoon with banners and balloons, then we put big tubs of water on it, then a dozen young girls armed with super-shooters climb aboard. On a hot day it is a hoot! Lots of people see us coming and move back, others want to get hit with the water.

From my tractor seat it looks like the parting of the Red Sea!
This gets lots of laughs. I also tell the girls "no shooting the driver", but some water arcs over me anyway.

I love to tell the girls to shoot any friend I see....we are the best float in the parade!

Back in 2007 I pulled a float for the Class of '57{50 yr} in honor of my sister which was her class.{Sis passed May 27,2004 from cancer.} It was a flat hay rack w/ bales and people, had the music of "The Class of '57" playing. Behind that was hooked a lawn mower trailer w/ a lady dressed in old time attire sitting in a rocking chair. The sign said "Still Rocking" A fun day this was on July 4th. 154th celebration comeing up,{I think} Could be more, cannt remember. The only year missed was back in 1958 due to flood. This was the time an elderly lady rode a tree log approx. 50 miles down river in the pitch black of night. Yes,she survived. Some may have read about it.

Be careful if you haul people, had one here a few years ago, women was in the back of a pickup and when the driver started she went over the back and was killed by the trailer.

I pulled a 2 x 3 sign behind my Deere tractors, in memory of my wife's cousin that as a Deere mechanic who died at a young age.
