I drive an older Ford Explorer for a local transportation company. There is a repetitive noise in the left rear above the left rear wheel compartment. The noise is hard to describe by words, sort of a clunking. My thought is could it be a small animal (squirrel?), but seems if so the animal would die. This sound has been there for over a week. Riders have heard it too so I'm not losing my mind! Nothing visually obvious in the wheel well or in the rear luggage area inside the lift-up rear door. The noise isn't causing any problem, but it is a minor irritation.

Is there any hidden or internal electrical or mechanical stuff in that part of the vehicle that could be failing?

Haven't had the vehicle to any shop for a good mechanic to diagnose.

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.

Sometimes an irregularity in a tire can make a noise. You might rotate the tires and see if the noise moves to a different location.

That's a new one to me!!

I had a clunk like that tried to find it for a long time turned out to be the lid for the storage compartment under the back seat on the passengers side. Randy

How "older" is the Explorer? First generation 1991 to 1994 it could be an upper shock mount. Second generation 1995 to 2001 it might be an exhaust bracket. I had that happen on mine. Struts did not come into play until some 2001 models and 2002 and later models - third generation. Newer than that, I have very little experience with.

When I was with GM, we sold a new Chevy minivan to a lady. A week later, she came in, just livid, about a rattle in the floor on the passenger side.

We ran it into the service department and found a jar of pickles rolling around under the seat.

I heard this story once on a fairly new vehicle that was making a noise and after an extensive search a bottle was found with a note i hope you had as much fun finding this as i had putting it here

The wife would sometimes see a mouse in our Grand Cherokee. We could trap one but another showed up. They would always run up under the dash and I could never figure out where they got in. Never got any odor from the heater/AC system. One morning she saw it then it came up from under the hood on the windshield. Aha! The plastic screen had one corner that did not fit to the cowl and I found the nest under the wiper motor.

Tell her you'll just turn a snake loose in the car, that will get rid of them!LOL

About 40 years ago, working at my dads garage, a lady in a late model Cadillac come sliding to a stop in the drive way, jumped out in total hysterics!

We finally got her calm enough to explain what was wrong.

Seems a snake had fallen out from under the dash, actually hit her right leg!

It then crawled back up under the dash. I spent an hour looking for it, so did others, never found it.

We ended up taking her home, I drove the car, she would not get back in it!

Don't know how the story ended, but probably with a sold car!

Years ago a neighbor had an '80 Dodge passenger van that had an annoying "jingling" sound from the back area. Ended up being a handful of those decorative chrome sheet metal screws/washers that held vinyl-covered paneling in place. They were in a little pile behind one of the panels. I guess the coffee whistle blew and he had a handful of them and he didn't want to miss a minute of his break time.

Have you been in the mud? I've seen especially reversed dish wheels pack in mud cause clunk or vibration. Just a thought. Also had broken belts in tires do that.
