What is the difference between a V belt with ribs on the underside, and V belts with no ribs.
reason is, I ordered a set of Gates B58 belts for my flail mower as a spare set. Got to thinking that may not have been a good idea. Any thoughts? Stan

The notches on the underside are to give the belt more flexibility, as in going around small diameter pulleys, or being bent backward around idlers and tensioners.

It will probably work well with a mower application.

If you are having trouble with belts, be sure everything is running in line, all bearings are good, no bent pulleys. There are also Kevlar reinforced belts that are really tough, last much longer.

Its been my experience that the belts with the notches underneath don't like to be be bent backwards over an idler. We buy the green wrapped belts if they need to be tensioned that way.

My combine was supposed to have the notched belts, my dealer kept saying. As I kept buying belts....

Finally got good smooth Gates belts from a belt supply, and could stop buying belts every year.

Just my experience in one application.

Those belts are called "Fractional" belts. Also cogged, notched, fractional horsepower, and a couple of others. They use them alot in HVAC work. They run quieter and are supposed to use less hp by bending easier. I have a little 20 inch on a large garage door lift. Use a 3/4 motor. Really does make a difference. Did some snooping around on the net and there are so many types of belts. Gates have always been super belts. Kevlar belts are super tough. Things that wear on belts over tighten, out of alignment, bent lips on pulleys, also rust in the grove of pulleys. I take a folded sheet of fine sand paper and turn the pulley and clean out the rust. Replace bent pulleys. If your pulleys are messed up you will see vibration. Belt flapping around. Should be smooth. Just what I have seen over the years.

Call Vbeltsupply.com, and they'll set you up with the correct belt....and it will last. Just sayin'
