Hyd post hole digger

I have a old post hole digger pto driven. I would like to make it hyd driven. And pin it to side of loader bucket. I have a pump from a Case backhoe. Will this pump make a hyd motor to run the post hole digger. I know it would turn less rpm, a good thing. On a tractor remote. But would it have enough torque. Thanks Vic

Not to rain on a parade. Personaly I would see if you could pickup a used hydraulic one. Hydraulic motors that big would cost almost as much as you skid loader.

Jeff it does not take a large motor at all if you are going to mount it and drive in the input where the pto shaft originally went. I think the other poster is thinking of the pure hydraulic that drive thru the top of the gear box. Google Land Pride and look at the hydraulic land pride, small motor fasten to where the shaft originally fit. as to the answer to your question about the pump being used for a motor, I have see folks try it with limited success.

The big question is, how much torque does a PHD require?

You might be able to go to the mfg, find out what the digger is capable of handling, get a ballpark figure from that.

With that information it's all math. Not easy, but start with what you have (the Case pump), determine what the GPM @ x RPM is, and the pressure rating. Next match a motor to it that will give the desired RPM (flow rate) and torque (pressure rating). The 2 go hand in hand, smaller displacement=higher RPM=lower torque, higher displacement=lower RPM=higher torque. Don't forget you will need a reservoir sized to handle the heat dissipation, a directional valve, pressure relief valve, filter, suction strainer, hoses...

As you can see, this see this can get very expensive. Mistakes can be devastating! A good shortcut would be to visit some equipment showrooms, write down model numbers of the components they use, take pictures, steal ideas. All of these components can be found used or discounted online. A hydraulic shop can help engineer this, but would not be fair to use their knowledge and not buy from them, (my opinion).

Hope this helps.

I agree but at work we have several very large kettle food mixer systems. Those motors are quite pricey. I was just trying to tell him not to bother cause time, parts, monkey fool around engineering, just go buy one or a good used one. I have a regular 3pt. Danuser hole digger my dad bought. I wouldn't even consider trying to convert it. There is so much imported stuff out there now the costs just Don't add up. Why bother?
