I need to get gps locations for culverts in a township I do maintenance work for. I have them mapped out on a map, but I need gps location on them. What device would work for this that is simple and cheap,
Thanks for any information.

If you have a smart phone, there are apps for that.
If not a Garmin GLO will feed into a tablet or other blue tooth device with locations.
You can also locate on Google maps, and get the coordinates there.

Depends on how accurate you want to be.

Hope this helps, Larry

Your smart phone should be accurate within one to two meters...so 6-7''. You can get a GPS booster for you phone for a couple hundred dollars which will get you about 1-2 ' . Real high end boosters cost a lot but will bring you into a couple inches.

How accurate do you need to be?

A tablet/ phone app might be 30 feet over time.

A waas device like a hiking gps might be pretty close today, and within 10-15 feet over time.

RTK costs money, but it writhing an inch or so over time, as it uses a stationary point on the ground to zero in.

There are some semi-free public networks that use radio towers to give you a good location, but they seem to need a lot of hands on software use, I wish I understood them better. Here is some old info, I'm sure it has changed.

Within 20 or 30 feet would be close enough, I don't have a smart phone, but I guess I could borrow one. I thought maybe there was a stand alone device out there that would give me this type of information. Electronics aren't really my thing. I appreciate the help and information.

The handheld gps devices you can pick up in a sporting goods store would be the thing. I got one years ago for $100, you can spend a lot more..... they are kinda like the gps devices for a car and traveling, but these are more designed for going cross country, measuring areas, marking spots, and so forth.

They (did anyhow) interface with the computer, now what sort of record you need and how to store it, in sure it's all there, but you would have to sort that out what you really need.....

GPS ESSENTIALS is a cell phone app that uses navigation satellites for reference. Accurate within a few feet. Available within a few feet

A GPS device will do it, but you could get a smart phone for a lot less money, and you'd be surprised at how handy it is for many other functions. I had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century too, but now am glad I didn't fight it too hard. Just keeping up communications with my kids and grandkids is worth the price of admission, everything else is a bonus.

I have a Garmin i use to use for Geo caching. It can be accurate up to 15 feet, and i have had them right on the money at 15 inches. I have also used my smart phone and taken a picture with it and it will give you a gps location on google maps with the longitude latitude numbers. But the app would be better on the smart phone and would be better. I sometimes take the longitude latitude cords and put them in search of google earth and it will put you right on the spot you were standing at.

I am reading this as:
you need the cooridinates of each culvert that you fix for the township?
For billing of services purpose?

Or to find get driving directions to the culvert?

If you just need the cooridinates for billing purposes, just use the computer, pull up "google maps", click on the culvert you fixed and a little window will pop up with the cooridinates listed.

Township board wants gps coordinates for each culvert in the township, I think it might be something the state is requiring. I just blade and mow there roads for them. I have given them a map of where the
culverts are in the past, but now they want gps coordinates. So as I pass each culvert while I blade, I wanted to record the location with a device, as stated I am not much on electronics. Thanks for the
information.

H the rest of the story. I'm sure you are trying to be nice and provide the information. BUT, it's their problem not yours. They should be willing to provide you with the necessary equipment to do the task. IF Not, then politely decline. Old saying," good guys end up last", meaning they will take advantage of you again and again. Sorry if I sound pessimistic, way to many jobs get passed down, after all you just blade and mow there roads for them. ( Rant Over )
