Yesterday a local 50 year old farmer was applying anhydrous to corn ground. While working on the applicator, a high pressure hose broke, and hit him
and killed him. Details are pretty sketchy. Lets be carefull out there

My uncle got his ribs broke that way once. He had a quick coupler from the tank to a toolbar. He was climbing up somehow, had ahold of the hose and the coupler popped loose. He was laid up for a while with that one.

Closest call I had with anhydrous was when I had an applicator with a pull rope valve for on and off. The rope ran out through a gap under the rear window of the tractor cab.

I always replaced the rope every year, but one year I got in a hurry and didn't. Out in the field, I turned around on the end, dropped the machine in the ground, and pulled the rope to open the valve. The valve opened=and the rope broke.

I was going across the field thinking, "What to I do now, Coach?" When I got out in the middle of the field, I swung the unit with the wind, took a huge breath, hit the shut off on the engine, bailed out of the cab, and took off running. I then walked around and came up to the tank with the wind and shut off the valve at the tank. Then replaced the rope. My lesson for the day.

My father-in-law did custom fertilizing with anhydrous. He was a staunch Methodist, and in the entire 17 years I knew him, from the time I met my wife until he passed away, I only heard him swear twice. Both times were when he'd burned his fingers with anhydrous.
