I want to fabricate a draw bar for a super 99 Oliver it is a 1" x 2 1/2 flat bar. What steel should I use?

Might be a good idea to talk to a really good welder shop / fabrication shop. They should be able to answer you questions on metal and how much because draw bars that I have seen are fabricated. Piece by piece. Also need to cut a big "V" in the metal and lay down multiple passes. Have a couple of toys that were fabricated and it looks Marvelous! ! NOT cheap but worth it.

its just cut out of high grade steel could be QT1 steel but not sure on the grade, with bends and a hole on each end. no welding involved. it depends on what and how much you will be working the tractor. mild steel will work also but it will bend . your saying 1 inch thick so thats easily bendable.

Chrome Moly should work and is not terrible expensive, as long as you don't have to weld it. A good weld shop or machine shop should be able to get it and drill the holes.

I have never seen a fabricated draw bar. Every one that I have seen are one piece. Maybe you are referring to the drawbar support?

ASTM A36 steel. mild steel has a working tensile strength of 20,000 psi---so it would be capable of pulling 50,000 lbs

(quoted from post at 05:37:34 04/27/18) Pulling rarely breaks a draw bar its the down pressure that gets it.

And that down pressure is likely to come from too much speed with a heavy draw bar load resulting in "galloping".

I found a piece of a beam off a junked out John Deere plow that worked just right on my Oliver 500. It wasn't one of the main beams,it was a brace.

Thanks--never thought of the repeated bending stresses-my dozers all have very short draw bars and with very little overhang past the support
