Diesel Fuel Filter Bowl Shattered Unexpectedly

Hi there everyone. Bizarre situation here.

The glass bowl under the primary fuel filter on my Massey 165 Diesel shattered today (Big chunks, maybe 5-6 pieces.) I hadn't touched the tractor since yesterday, when I ran it a good bit spreading fertilizer. Hadn't touched the bowl itself since this time last year.

It was raining and in the 40's today, compared to the partly sunny 60's yesterday. Unsure if it was a pressure thing, an overtightening thing (though again it had been a year since I touched the filter/bowl), or just random fatigue on a potentially 50 year old part.

Either way, I'm left scratching my head, and an unfortunate 8-10 gallons of diesel in the very rainy driveway. Sigh.

Has anyone had anything similar happen, or any insights as to what might have caused it? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I will simply concur with your fatigue theory.

Most likely the fatigue or over tightened it last year. Can you get a spin on adapter for that?

I had the same thing happen to my 230 Diesel some years ago.
It had been a little less than a year since a fuel filter change. I parked it in the pole barn and a few days later went in to find the remains of a fuel puddle and broken glass on the floor. I figured it was stress because I will admit that I have a habit of tightening things until just before they break.

Had on break years ago on the MF 1150 while plowing, had a nice walk back to the barn that night..

The first time I changed the filter on my 245 I noticed there was a
small chip out of the edge of the glass bowl. It still sealed so I left it alone, later that summer it self destructed on it's own while shut off and parked for the week.

Thanks, that's reassuring - I have the same tendency myself, especially when I'm convinced I'm seeing fuel weep out.

Do they make spin on fuel filters? Never heard of one, just for oil. I'm all ears!

I have seen secondary glass filters break when a nozzle tip sticks and you get high fuel pressure spikes in the low pressure side. Also in inline injection pumps when the delivery valve seal cracks it will do this. Al

my dad had a 684 IH one day it was sitting idling while i loaded the planter the glass bowl cracked in half . IH had a kit to change to spin on filters
so we changed it.

You can buy a spin on filter adapter kit for the 165
MF. We did it years ago, much handier to use.

same thing occurred on my massey 240, i had over tightened the retainer.

They also make aluminum cups for some of those fuel filters.

When we put one on the 165 , we bought it from the MF dealer. I have no idea if it was a MF part or after market. well over 30 years ago.

Fuel filter adapter part number DP1000 can be ordered with 0r without filter. Woods-Tisco which is now is SMA has them, they are for CAV filter system. I have replaced a lot of them on JD IH Ford MF. I use Fleetguard FF214 spin on you can use other brand of your choice.

Thanks, we have an MF dealer 3 miles from here, but I have very little luck when they try to find me something on their computer.
