Farmall 706 steering wheel leak

Hey! So I asked a bit ago about the Farmall M coil, and I was told that I should not have removed the magneto coil in the first place, and I was told to ask before I take stuff apart. lol! So now I am asking... Our Farmall 706 has been leaking hydraulic fluid from the base of the steering wheel, below the throttle. Now, Before I take the steering wheel off, I am wondering if anyone knows what the problem could be, maybe they have the same problem. My next question is, if no one knows what the problem could be, does any one know how to remove the steering wheel? I already romoved the first nut that is sticking out in the open, I am wondering if I need to use a puller to pull the steering wheel off, or is it threaded on? or are there screws or something I am missing? Thanks in advance yal!

the steering wheel slides on a splined shaft, remove nut , if it has not been off in a long time its gonna be tough, it will take a steering wheel puller or maybe even a gear puller, the seal on the orbit motor is leaking, mine did the same thing

Ok. Yeah, the nut has not been taken off prolly since the tractor was brand new. I got that taken off already. No now I just need a gear puller on it? Thaen how deep do I go before I reach the seal you are talking about?

you will have to take steering wheel off under the steering wheel is the orbit motor it has to come off also, then there is a panel under the steering wheel, take it off and you will see orbit motor, there are steel lines connected to the orbit motor they are a bugger to get off and on but can be done, there are 4 bolts that hold on the orbit motor, take to hydraulic shop and have them replace seal

Once you get the wheel off there is a dust seal to pop off and
then there is a snap ring holding the rubber seal in remove the
old seal and install the new one with th cup down, now when
you reinstall the snap ring be sure to install with the sharp side
up that way it will bite and not pop out----- snap rings are
stamped out which leaves one side kind of rounded and the
other side more sharp or square just feel of it against your
finger a you can tell ------ this from a old IHC service bulletin

Contrary to some of the advice you've gotten, it's a "steering valve" or an "Orbitrol", there' NOT an "orbit MOTOR" hiding in there.

Ok. thank you. Hopefully I will get that thing off tonight or tomorrow. 8)

So I have a gear puller on the steering wheel, and when I get it cinched up, then the puller slips off. Is the steering wheel threaded on?

that is helpful info, I did all the work for nothing, looks like my hydraulic shop was scamming me , Thank for that info

I spelled his screen name wrong it is The tractor vet, you know how us old timers, are guess I was outa orbit instead of orbitrolling

haha! ok, I got it now! thank you!

no it is not threaded on, if it has never been off they are a pain in the butt to get loose I soaked mine in penetrating oil for awhile ended up taking a gear puller to get wheel off broke the plastic on the underside of steering whell

Ok. yeah, this one is a pain so far. lol! The plastic was one of the first things to go! Lol!

The steering wheel has threads to put 2 1/4 inch bolts into. The puller can be used on them without damage to the wheel. Now before you pull the wheel If it is leaking on the bottom you need to take the lines apart on the bottom under the orbital hand pump. If it is leaking under the steering wheel you only need to pull the wheel then with the engine running turn the wheel to push the bearing and seal out the top. Then put the new parts back in. If you need more help call me 989 413 5684

Ok. I think I know what you are talking about... I was trying to clean those two holes out thinking they might have had screws in them, holding the steering wheel into place. lol.

Ford guy: The bearing and seal come as a kit deal. There is a brass bushing bearing and an oil seal. With the wheel just put on enough to turn it with the pressure it will push the old seal and bushing out.

Ok. So can I get a kit for that at Oreylies? Or do I have to find it online, or go to a tractor store?

Ok i am awake now . How to fix the seal under the steering wheel on a 706 , First get a 1/4 fine BOTTOMING TAP and clean out the two hole next to the nut . you will need two long 1/4 fine thread bolts atleast 6 1/2 inches long and a steering wheel puller or harmonic balancer puller and you may have to do a little grinder work to get the bolts in closer to the puller screw as the center to center on the steering wheel are usually to close for a straight in shot thru the puller holes , Tis is why i say use LONG BOLTS as to get them both in you will have to sorta bend one to start the other . Now you can use and impact to remove the big nut or a breaker bar with a 3 inch extension. once the wheel is off then remove the snap ring and replace the wheel back on the shaft and give a shap fast turn on the wheel in either direction and the seal SHOULD pop out . I would use some carb or disc brake cleaner firsts to clean the area or any dirt or old oil and blow the area off . Now as for the KIT the last one i installed came from your friendly Case I H store and it was like 9 or 10 bucks , as to finding it else where never looked . With kit in hand this is less then a one beer job if your not a fast drinker.

Ok. So I got the Big nut off already, I guess whats next for me is to pull the wheel then.
I am going to town today, what is that kit called?
