Starter lubrication

Starter on 1520 disengaging early as engine starts. Pulled starter and disassembled. Pieces of hard black stuff fell out. Probably dried up lube. Can't see any problems. What should lubricant be when I reassemble? Any other thoughts on original problem?

If the starter drive/"Bendix" is disengaging early, it is worn out and needs to be replaced. At this point, NO use putting it together with the old one.

As to lube, a LITTLE dab of white lithium grease inside the bushings is good.

To clarify this, the starter is a gear reduction unit, not a regular Bendix. Solenoid on top like GM, engages gears and runs motor.
