Starter lubrication

Starter on 1520 disengaging early as engine starts. Pulled starter and disassembled. Pieces of hard black stuff fell out. Probably dried up lube. Can't see any problems. What should lubricant be when I reassemble? Any other thoughts on origonal problem?

Replace the starter drive. Even though the clutch may feel good, you are not applying near the power by hand that the starter motor does.

Those also don't like oil. If the rear main is slinging oil into the starter, the drive won't last long.

The black, probably just accumulated dirt and oil. Clean it up, check for wear in the brushes and bushings, put a very small amount of grease in the bushings.

If there is a starter/alternator shop near you, they might can supply parts or a complete rebuilt/new starter much cheaper than the dealer.

Thanks for the advice. How about Lithium grease for the gears? Anything on the shaft?
I'll try to find an appropriate electric/starter shop.
