LED lamp standards?

Does anyone know if the various headlamps sizes are standardized? I'm thinking about replacing some on my tractors with LEDs. For example, my little JD 850 has some rectangular headlamps, with a replaceable bulb in the back. If I knew that the whole assembly was some sort of standard size, it would make it easy to find a replacement. I see all kinds of standards for the bulbs, but what about the lens & housing. Anybody with experience in this?

I doubt they are standard automotive lamps, especially since the bulb is removable.

If they are glass, better chance they might be standard. There should be a number inked on the back near where the bulb goes in.

Something you might be able to substitute would be some aftermarket fog lights. Some of them are rectangular, about the same size.

Just some observations gleaned from spending money on things I did not understand...(read that as been there done that)...Almost all vehicular lighting uses a particular style of bulb which, when lit, generates light that is then reflected outward. The interaction between the bulb and the reflector is designed and engineered to work in the most efficient manner possible, focusing the light in the desired direction. Introducing a different style bulb (to a reflector designed for something else) usually results in poor dispersal of the reflected light. It might be bright, or even very bright, but it also may be going everywhere except where you want it to go. I'd go with an entire new unit.......may not be as pretty as keeping the stock headlight buckets, but it'll probably do ya a better job.

You are lucky that you have an earlier 850 with headlites with replaceable bulbs. Later they went to an (AFAIK) oddball/proprietary sealed beam.

Dan, go over to tractor off topic. Go to page 2 and look at Lawn Tractor Bright LED. I posted it the other day. Shows you what can be accomplished with LED bulbs. What You need to do. Take the light on your tractor apart and see what the bulb # is. That is where you need to start. If the bulb goes into the BACK of the fixture you need a projector type bulb. That is what I installed in all of my lawn / Garden tractors. If you look at the picture carefully you can see the same light pattern on the back of the house with both bulbs. Many old school tractors take 1156 12volt or the 6 volt equivalent of. You can get "sealed" beam look alike bulbs also. Go on Ebay and type in LED car bulbs. There are hundreds of types. Just a tip. If you need one of the aforementioned projector bulbs make sure you look for the Samsung makers lable in the listing. Much brighter bulb. I also put a tiny dab of Silicon grease on the bottom of the led before install. Keeps corrosion away. Be brave this will not take you too long and as you can see in the pictures it is well worth it. You can also look on U'tube at some of the videos. There are hundreds that cover almost anything you can think of.

thanks, this helps. I didn't know if just putting a LED bulb in the housing would work worth a darn. I looked for your post but didn't see it. But it helps to know that this might work.

Regarding Tin Man's comments below, I know that the housing and reflector are engineered for the bulb (or vice versa) and wasn't sure if a replaceable bulb would be worth the effort. I recognize that the light pattern might not be focused like it was, but I might risk the cost of a bulb to see what kind of results I get.

Thank you much Louis for doing the link. The LED replacements just keep getting better every year. Look up that bid number on EBAY and they are just under $20.oo for a set. Give them a try. Look at my pictures in the back yard. Yes they make that big of a difference. As I said you need the projector type to really make your "headlights " reach out there.

You're welcome!

Should be able to change just the bulb, my case international has headlights made into the grill like a car, I bought led bulbs from eBay and they made a huge difference
