Guy selling this described it as "third member" - OK, why that name? First two members are ___? Any members beyond the third?

That is the removable pinion and ring gear assembly from a Ford car or truck rear axle. It is called a third member. Don't know why it is called a third member. Not all rear axle assemblies have a third member. Normal GM rear axles you can't remove the pinion and ring gear assembly as an assembled unit. The parts are assembled into the total axle assembly through the rear cover plate.

Exactly correct Rusty. My father went to mech
school in 1946 that taught those terms. There was
lots of Ag and mech schools set up for returning
GI?s after the war.

Just saw the same unit from my TW20 this winter. (Makes this thread tractor related.... :)

It was not near as easy to get to.

ou are revealing your young age. :)

I have replaced a few of those over the years. Never really thought about where the term came from. Did one in a 65 GMC a few years ago. The guy thought his trans went out.

How do you know it is a 9" vs an 8" from the inside via photo?

It's a 9", but possibly a 8.75 ring gear, it would be easiest to look at the front side to tell though. The 8" is more flat on top where the 9" is round with small bumps around the bolt holes. This 3rd member is from a car, the trucks did not have pinion snubbers.
