8 Foot wide Rotary Cutter

I was at Agri-Supply and was looking at the 8 foot wide Kodiak Rotary Cutter. Has anyone had any experience with the Kodiak Brand???? Also is the shorter length better than a standard 6 foot cutter. Comparing the 8 foot wide to my HD 6 foot wide, my 6 foot is longer than the 8 foot. Would much rather cut 8 foot wide than 6 foot. What size tractor would I have to have to carry the 8 foot. Wanted to here your opinions.
Thanks
Charlie

You will get what you pay for, usually. I had a Deere MX8 and didn't like the quality of cut. I bought a new Bush Hog 3008 and it cut much better and has been a great machine. I put 3-400 hours a year on it doing custom mowing, bought it back in 2011 and have only replaced blades (fairly cheap) and each of the solid tires (probably do to the rocks and rough fields I cut). I liked it so well I bought a second one a couple of years ago when I heard they were discontinuing that model. The shorter deck and two tail wheels are a big plus as you will get less scalping. I use a 65 hp tractor with the wheels set out to 8' for the best cut. It will take about a 90" wheelbase to handle this mower if you get the 3pt model.

I have an 8 ft Kodiac Rotary mower. It does good work. The 8 footers have two 4-ft blades, hence shorter and compact. I've cut heavy stuff with it and a CaseIH 585 at 52 PTO hp. I've had it on a number of tractors from 40 thru 70 hp. Surprisingly a 4500 Mahindra that is not a powerhouse at 40ish hp does well with it. I also have a 7 ft Modern Machinery rotary. One big 7 ft blade. Mower is long, heavy but once that long 7 ft blade is spinning it really cuts with ease.

Eldon's 8 ft looks like a heavier machine with likely more beefy gearboxes. Compare deck steel gauges.

I also have a 3008 like Eldon. They are simply a beast! Extremely heavy built. Not a comparison to what you are looking at. Really depends on what you are going to cut with it. As far as hp requirement it is about 5 PTO hp per foot but again it depends on what you are cutting and how fast you are moving.

Also a cutter like the 3008 is heavy! I believe it is 1700#. So keep that in mind. I run mine on a 1974 Ford 5000 and it takes weight on the front to keep it on the ground.

I have had two seven foot mowers a woods pull type and a brushhog brand sq something I can't remember the rest of the number it is a 3 point 7 foot offset to one side .both more were only about 5 foot long but 7 foot wide. When I get into heavy tall stuff neither one did a very good job if knocking every thing down a lot of stragglers still standing but cut in half.but they both do a good job on shorter stuff around a couple feet tall it must be because the material is mot under the brushhog as long compared to the conventional brushhog that are longer

I have a Kodiak Med Duty 6'...90 hp gearbox. No gripes. I had a Mohawk 8' years ago with dual rear wheels and twin blades. Problem I had was that my place is rolling hills and hardly any ground is even. The large mower just had a hard time getting a good cut with it's width. A 5' would do the best cutting job but too slow....so I settled on the 6' on my last purchase and it works fine.
