Picked up a couple of jugs of Walmart brand DEF the other day and went to dump one in and saw there was no seal on it. That got me to wondering if someone could have tampered with it, or even returned it with plain water in it?? I would hope Walmart wouldn't put a returned item back on the shelf, but who knows. Anyway, before I used it I stopped at a Walmart and checked other jugs, half of them the seal came off with the cap. Anyway, just wondering if there is a way to check to make sure you are getting pure DEF? It would be a pita if you had some bad stuff or water...

You can get testers to check DEF fluid, ranging from
sime to fancy. Simple being like a battery
hydrometer with the floating balls, the fancy being
an electronic gadget. I would probably try and find
the middle of the road refractometer style one as it
offers reasonable accuracy and should be under
$100. Sam

All kinds of seals come off along with the "twist off cap." Even cooking oil.
Not to worry. Have pondered the same issue myself. Remember the "Cyanide" killer
of years ago poisoning tylenol. Tampering with stuff on the
shelf.

Let a couple drops sit out and dry. DEF
will leave white crystals behind.

I have got opened jugs of oil from Wal-Mart
before. About 1/2 quart short of being
full. Valvolines old jugs the seal would
not just fall off. They now have new jugs
with a clear cap that you can see the seal.
I must not have been the only one.

I have heard that the system can be fooled by just using water. I would guess that might be true for a little water added to a tank of DEF that is not yet completely empty.

Was the seal gone, or just loose?

If it was gone, or had appearance that it had been cut or punched, I would be more concerned.

If you had a means of accurately weighing and measuring it, DEF should weigh 9 lb. per gallon, where water is 8.34.

Not sure what would happen if tap water were put in the system, it would probably just set the light until it was drained and replaced.

As for Walmart, or any business, returning return goods to the shelf, yes, that is common practice. I seriously doubt that the seal would be checked.

In fact, I did buy a bicycle tube at Walmart once, opened it up, had a used tube carefully folded and returned to the box. I just trashed it, wasn't worth the trouble of convincing them what happened.

donot add water there is a def quality sensor in tank on 14 emission earlier emisions dont have it but on all levels if it cant lower nox it will go into derate. takes a service tool to get it out.

SON kept getting warning lights & messages on his 2014 Ram CTD, DEF contamination. First 2 times the
dealer fixed him right up and got him on his way home in minutes. Third time the dealer jerked him
around, said he had to use Mopar DEF, yadda-yadda-yadda. Refused to get his truck in the shop to reset
computer for 3 weeks. Next day he had his truck deleted, doesn't use DEF at all anymore. Well known
problem on the CTD forums.

Another word on DEF. Don't buy more than
you will be using shortly, it does have a
shelf life. Also needs to be kept out of
sunlight and away from high temps.

Deleting DEF is fine if you intend to keep the truck forever, or sell it privately when you sell. Removing the DEF system kills any trade in value to a licensed car dealer.
