Which disc blades?

My Deere 111 disc is in need of some new blades. More than likely going to go with 20 inch blades. I do not do alot of dising but use it the most in the spring to open up ground we hauled manure on so it dries better before chisel plowing. It has smooth now but I was wondering about maybe putting notched on the front? Which guage blade would you recommend? I have no rocks or stones. Where have you bought in the past that you would recommend? Is there any you would not buy? Thanks for the ideas. Tom

Hi,we had smooth on the front of ours and replaced them with notched. The notched will wear faster but they will help tear up the manure a little better. Try and get the heaviest gauge plates that fit your budget. We put Fafnir bearings on ours. Double or more the price of Chinese bearings but the made in USA ones will last a lot longer less misery and down time.

I can not recommend Shoup disk blades. They do not seem to wear very well. I would go with Wiese or JD blades. Wiese makes good tillage equipment parts.

I got mine a year ago from shoup. Don't remember the gauge. Don't think I had a choice. I put them on the front only and that made a whole different disk out of it. Very aggressive compared to smooth. My old ones were wore down to 16 from 20 so that might have had something to do with it. Now last week I put some new 9.5-14 imp tires on it. $84 each. Carlyle. So last two years I put a lot of money in that disk but should take me to the end now.

Go with the OEM blades. They will last much longer than the ?will fit? blades. I?m sure John Deere sells the notched blades.

To each his own. I buy from ASC and buy the 3mm blades as they cut the best when worn on the tips and I have no rocks, and am not hard on my equipment. Otherwise I'd use the thicker blade and grind a sharp edge on it when the point is worn off. I prefer smooth as they cut deeper along the whole circumference of the blade....proven on the same axle with both kinds cutting. Brazilian or Indian makes no difference to me in chemistry. Neither seem to outshine the other.

Yes, good memory. The 9.5s are just under 3" taller then the car tires I had on it. So that carries the disk about 1.5 higher off ground. May not seam like much but Pa always said " if you had 1.5 inches on the end of your nose, you would have one hell of a beak"

1.5 makes a big difference in tires . I?m going put 7.50 14 trailer tires on my disk I think . These little car tires are going to pop one of these days going down the road at the worst time.
