Selling On Craigs List Can Be Fun

I decided to thin down some stuff that I wasn't using or had no plans to use. A few larger tools and left over truck parts from projects. This was all larger items for $40 or more. I started listing a few items a week a month ago. I dug the stuff out and took good pictures. Listed them for very reasonable prices. The stuff has all sold within a week of listing it. Get a call, the guy shows up pretty much on time and gives me what I am asking. I only give my land telephone line so no e-mails or texting. I got $400 in my pocket and more room in my workshop. I am starting to have as much fun selling as buying. I got rid of pretty much everything on my list. My wife is threatening to nail down all of her stuff down so I don't sell it.

I have no problem selling on CL. I think most of the folks that are bitching about selling on there are ones who just do know what the CL market will support. I see stuff on there all the time that is listed for more than a good auction or dealer would sell it for. Man just has to realize folks shopping on there are bargain hunters. I hear all these horror stories but actually I have met some really nice folks from selling on there.

I also have had excellent luck buying and selling things on cl. But like anything else I'm sure some have had some bad experiences

I've had good luck buying and selling as well. I think the key is price. If you are asking top dollar you might have to wait and sort through a lot of people. Stuff priced reasonably seems to move quickly.

I have sold a lot on Craigslist, have not had any bad experiences, just more frustrations as there ore those who never show or reply, and "tire kickers" you have to weed through. The biggest "problem" I had was an out of state buyer sent me a cashiers check which I shouldn't have agreed to, it turned out a good check but he never picked up the machinery for 10 months. I won't let that happen again.

The problem I run into is scammers. I will get a slew of replies that originate in Nigeria. The scammers reply to an add, Then, if you bite, they send a check for more than you were asking, "to cover shipping". You then get an e-mail or text from the shipper asking you to wire them their money. The check you received though is drawn on a real account which does not belong to them. When the company gets their statement, they then reverse the charge, and you are left holding the bag. You still have your item since the shipper never left Nigeria.
I advertise rooms for rent, but have also had replies from them for miscellaneous merchandise. It starts with a reply, Oh, I want your room, I am moving to your area from Guam, or some other distant place. Then they follow up with an e-mail that they had a family emergency, and will be flying to attend to it, usually some place outside the U.S. so their vehicle is going to be shipped to your location. Next you get a check for an amount larger than the rent you were asking, as I mentioned above, sent by their daddy. It will arrive Fed Ex in most cases. Then you get contacted by the shipper who wants payment before he brings the vehicle.
I've never fallen for it, but they do their darnest to get you to believe. While I was laid up, I played their game. I got over a dozen checks which I turned over the the Feds. They pretty much confirmed that since the scammers were in Nigeria, they couldn't do anything even though the checks were mailed from inside the United States.
The big tip off for me was they didn't ask any questions about the place. No request for photos, or what the neighbors were like, how far from town etc. It was also clear they were using British style rather than American.

I find most of my toys on CL. Both my plows, my VAC. And all kinds of parts that I need. A careful eye can spot the hard to find part on a ?junk? listing. I actually use an app that lets me browse through each state really quickly. It can get a man into trouble though as you start to acquire more JUNK than you need.

I've also had good experiences with Craigslist. The scammers are easy enough to spot quickly. I've sold a lot of stuff that would otherwise just ended up on a junk pile.

You need to have a little fun with the scammers. It is pretty obvious who you are dealing with. Make them think you are going along with the deal. Have them next day air the payment to you. That costs them a few bucks. If you do this they should get the idea that maybe they should actually work for a living like the rest of us. Probably have ten or 15 scammer checks laying in my cupboard.

Add me to the list of CL likers. have sold thousands of dollars worth, never a bad check! Buy stuff all the time on CL!

A first for me same deal ck cleared I got my money about 60 days ago they have not came to pick it up... His daughter called two times gonna pick it up on a Saturday I have not seen them yet...

I listed a old tool with missing parts for a bud the guy that came out to buy it borough more of his junk that he thought had no value. He took me out to eat this morning :)...

Used tires folks drive 200 miles round trip to buy them  WTF I guess poor folks like to ride too...

Price, sometimes if priced to cheap it looks like a scam are its junk. I have had great luck with cracklist (yes I am addicted) I have called on tractors are implements I told them over the phone you have it priced on the high side I can not pay that for it resale it and make money I hope you get your price. Take my number down if it does not sale and you get to the point you want it gone call me. I have had them call me a year later and told me to give them what I thought it was worth. By then the tire kickers have aggravated them are they have learned that its not as good as they thought and come down on the price and want it gone.

There are still a lot of good folks out there :)....

Add me to fan of CL list.I've sold a pile of stuff on there I'd thought I'd have to haul to scrap.Had a set of wheels and tires on CL and had forgotten they were on there 0 Hits, then out of the blue a guy calls and he's torn up a tire and wants them,He's 3 hrs away and is at my house at 7AM the next morning,he's loaded and gone by 7:30 to go change a wheel and bale hay that day.
Where else but CL would we had found out about each other? Also have bought lots of bargains on CL too just have to be fueled up,have the trailer hooked up and cash on hand to be 1st.

Yea, aren't we supposed to be reading how all buyers on CL are rotten aweful human beings only out to thrive from the good folk selling?

This post just doesn't seem right!

We have both bought and sold on Craigslist with good results...My last 3 vehicles have been purchased from there..Heres a picture of the latest one,a 1991 Ford Ranger 3.0 V-6 automatic purchased in Nov 2017 from central Kansas with 113,000 miles....The seller came down $300 on his own and delivered it nearly half way with a full tank of gas..So far its ran great after driving it for nearly 3000 miles..No one seemed to want it out his way..

Was looking for tires for my old 92 p.up & found a pair of 10 ply wallyworlds mounted {same size and rims} like new on CL for 40$ for the pair. Drove 75 miles to get them. Happy as a lark.

I have bought off Craigslist but have never sold anything. I bought my WD45 and plow and the truck I just bought. I ask a lot of questions before buying and make it clear to seller if item is not what they say it is I walk.I looked at a lot of trucks before I bought the one I did.I looked at about ten trucks and caught a number of them in lies if you ask enough questions.

Craigslist can be fun. Have some gates listed and had a call from a lady offering to trade me a haircut for a 12 ft gate. Had to tell her I didn't believe in cutting my hair. Sold some cyclone fence yesterday that was going to scrap. Got 3 times what the scrap yard would have paid and didn't have to load it. CL has been good to me this year so far.

Decided to sell some stuff last month on CL and FB and am almost up to $14,000 already. Facebook groups are a good place to sell as you can target your audience (I belong to a couple of AC groups on there). I accept Paypal friends and family, so no charges and it is safe and easy to transfer to my bank account.

Oh, believe me, I do. I used to string them along pretty good. Told one guy my bank was having trouble clearing his check. He was texting me three times a day. Finally told him the payment was on the way. He asked for the confirmation number and I told him I some how lost the receipt, but he would still be able to claim it in Youngstown Ohio.
Told another I was banned from using Western Union. Other times I try to make it seem like I am an empty headed college kid. "I deposited your check, but it wasn't big enough to cover my over draft so can't send cash. Any way I can just mail you a check?"
I wish there was a way to catch the person mailing the checks. Some one in the United States is dropping them in the Fed Ex box.

My camper and golf cart came from CL. I called the guy on the cart and told him I would be there in 2.5 hours,he turned two others away because I said I was coming. There is a 2N with a blade and mower on now for $1200.00 and the guy has not said a thing about the Sherman combo on it.

A couple years ago, I had put up a CL ad for some stuff I wanted cleaned out. Got a call from a guy about an item in the background of one of the pics. It was the remains of a late 50's? Chevy truck cab. One with 3 rear windows.

Everything had pretty much been gutted from it including the windshield and frame. I thought it was scrap. The guy came to look at it and offered me $100. He was driving an S10. We threw about 10 junk tires in the box for support and set the cab on top. I almost felt bad as he drove away.

OK Eldon. I have asked on here different times on how to get on Facebook to find things like that, even school closings due to weather. And all i could get was YOU WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH FACEBOOK. So I have never been able to find out how to get on facebook for things like you said you had on there and sold. I bought a hay rake last year and they said they had it advertised on facebook and no calls, when they put it on CL I found it right away and delt for it sight unseen as the asking price was parts only machine instead of one that with a little repair was ready for field. So again how do I find that stuff on facebook? Anybody willing to tell me now instead of just saying you want nothing to do with facebook?

I would like to find an AC group on craigslist. How. checked on local site . but cannot see how to join anything. Please advise.

The groups are on Facebook only. You must have a FB account, then search for Allis Chalmers. There are a number of groups you can ask to join, once accepted you can post items for sale. You can click on "marketplace" on the left and post ads as well. I search areas around the country by typing in a nearby city and do a 100 mile radius....

You need to be a FB member. Once a member you can search for anything, market place in the LH column will give results from any city you type in....

And how do you get to be that FB member? And why should you have to be a member to find a bussiness that is only using FB to get their information out to the public. Or the fire department that says find us on facebook or the school to find information on school happenings or like the new car wash just built in town with a sign that says find us on facebook? I am not interested in the gosip part of facebook. Just the bussiness part and if you cannot find the bussiness that only uses it to advertise are they not loosing money? And like that farmer I bought the rake off of that had it on facebook how are people supposed to find it?

Facebook is a business and they can set their own rules. I you don't want to join I guess you can't play.

I never shopped nor bought on CL. This past week I decided to see what tractors were for sale. Pulled up a pic and decided to ask some questions. Only seller contact mechanism I saw was in the upper left corner of the ad, yellow flag and forget the name...contact???? I put my questions in there assuming that the software would give the seller my email address with the question. Never heard from them.

How did your customers get in touch with you?

That box should have starting at top, contact name, may or may dot have name. Then under it line marked call that if they gave a phone number it will be there. Next a line marked reply by email and an email address for craigs list fordwarding, That I have not found to work but email address is good. then a line marked webmail links that does nothing for me. Then a line marked copy and paste into your email and the same email address listed above. I do not know hoe to copy and paste so I just type that address into my email same as starting any other email. I always print out the page the box and email address shows up on to be able to be sure I have information corectly as my brain is not long enough to remember it. And there is an add on right now I need to do that with. So unless there is a phone number listed or they put their contact information in description you have to just send email using the unique email address of CL and that address is only good for that one add, every other add will have a different email. Then all you can do is hope the seller will respond to your email tha CL has forfarded to him.
