Thanks for the help re: Dodge manual tranny/pilot bearing.

I wanted to send thanks to the collective wisdom here at ytmag, especially Steve@Advance, keith true, and caterpillar guy who pointed me to a bad pilot bearing (and possibly bad throw out bearing) causing my shifting woes described in the link.

Much appreciated,
clutch/tranny question

I went back and added a comment on the original question so that somebody searching for that problem in the future will know what the answer was. Since I didn't R&R it myself, I'm relying on the other guys assessment, but bottom line is the pilot bearing was trashed, the throw-out bearing was a little rough, obviously did the clutch, pressure plate, machine (and shimmed, which I might not have done) the flywheel while he was in there. So far the intermittent problem isn't back. I'll update again if it shows up again, but right now I think you guys figured it out. Doubly important in this case since two local shops had told me it was definitely the tranny. If I'd paid them to replace the tranny ($3-4k), they would have replaced all of the above in the process and would have wasted the money on the tranny which wasn't needed.

Thanks again,

Bob

I am not making excesses for someones lack of ability other than to say replacing clutches are standard transmission work/diagnosis is becoming a lost art... On a professional wrench site this past week end a shop owner was going nuttz looking for a clutch alignment tool for a clutch job  He admitted he had replaced very few and was lost without a alignment tool... I told him to make one out of a broom stick are look for a universal clutch alignment tool encase there was a next time...

Yep. I took it to a place over an hour away, and I was the 2nd truck that week from my town. He get's a lot of work from a wide area, and I'll gladly recommend him over where I live.
