Changing Gear oil

I have a 1947 farmall h that the gear oil is a milky white, i guess it would have water in it. Can i flush it out with something like diesel? Any suggestion on how to clean it before i add new oil?

gjlog I just finished changing out the diff and tranny oil on my m5, did not find any water, lucky!! (I think the oil was from 1961! BLACK!) the manual said to use diesel, so I used diesel and it took 2 flushes to get it clean. filled it close to full on the first flush, rocked the tractor back and forth and let it sit all night. next morning rocked the tractor again and then pulled the plug, still came out black. let it drain most of the day then refilled again, next morning rocked the tractor some more and pulled the plugs, and it was not as black so let it drain 24 hours and then refilled with standard 80/90 gear oil.

Be aware of a couple things. When you unscrew that rear pipe plug, the mixture is going to SHOOT out. Get ready to deflect it and catch it. I had to remove my flat top, and glad I did, I used a wood shim to scoop all the settled sludge out of the bottom, and there was quite a bit. Just a diesel mix would not have budged that solid mess.

Really, any residual that would be left is harmless. Just think how long your tractor has been going with what was in it. You think a few cups of that in 7 gallons of fresh is really going to do any harm?

In 6 months the oil's going to look milky again whether you waste a bunch of diesel fuel flushing it out, or not. My own personal opinion here, but I would not waste the diesel fuel.

Jack the tractor up and spin the wheels under power. Straight 50 weight motor oil is better oil than any GL-1 or GL-4. Is yellow metal friendly and won't ruin wet couches or wet brakes.
