One side has 4 matching bolts and nuts. The other doesn't and sometimes makes popping noises when on a hill. I can't find a place to order them. Any ideas? My wife is going to try Fastenal tomorrow. Do I need washers behind the nuts? One has washer 3 don't. Also what grade should they be? Thanks.

I always used flange nuts that have the washer made on them. If you do use washers they need to be grade eight washers as regular washers are so soft they will crush and let the wedge/lock come lose. Use a torque wrench to make sure the new bolts are tight. Then re-torque them after some use as they will work together and become a little loose.

If you do not need them for a few days look on the web site: https://www.boltdepot.com/
They are much cheaper than Fastenal and only take a few days to ship to here in the Midwest. I buy from them several times each month. Good quality product at reasonable prices. You do not have to buy large numbers of bolts/nuts either you can buy one if you want. They clearly have single pricing and cheaper volume pricing.

The clamp in first pic is worn on edge that contacts rim. Build up by welding and smooth up. New bolts will help, once clamp wears they will still pop.

They are a fine threaded 5/8 bolt if I remember correctly. Lubricated torque as follows: Grade 2-(80 ft.lb), grade 5 (125 ft.lb.), grade 8 (175 ft. lb.)

The factory bolts are a special carriage bolt that is about equal to a grade 5 bolt. So I would say 125 ft. lbs. On any factory bolts.

I tried to find my 981 manual but I could not easily find it. So I just used a bolt torque chart. Some Ford fellow may chime in with the torque the "Book" says.
