I see CL now wants $5 to run an ad in "Services" for 30 days....I see charges coming soon for "For Sale" ads....maybe it would be good as it would weed out some of the scammers??

Craigs list has been charging for housing ads "in certain markets" for quite some time. Its also been charging for "by dealer" ads for a while. Its only a matter of time before they charge money for every ad. Which personaly I think would kill craigslist. Their only real advantage is they are free. In my neck of the woods craigs list has been DEAD! Don't know if the long winter is to blame or what. But ads on face book or staying about the same maybe slightly more active. If craigslist charged say $10 that would be the end of free ads and anything with a value less than $20. Which is where most of the deals are.

I have wondered since day one how Craigslist made money. I used them a lot in the past. Not as much anymore. It seems like about half the time I get scammers. Most of the smaller stuff I just take to consignment auctions and let it sell. I have much less bother and get a good check in the mail.

When CL started, ads in newspapers were reasonably cheap, so they had to be free to compete with print. Nowadays, print media is nearly dead. classified ads are expensive and most people don't bother looking at them anyway. CL has a near-monopoly on certain kinds of ads, so it only makes sense that they would charge for those.

once they start charging for there for sale ads they will end up closing shop. If I remember right when they first tried to get started they wanted that but they saw real quick it wouldn't work. a lot of people use it but wont pay for it.

Here in central VA we still have 3 good weekly ad papers that cost about $1.50 to buy but placing most ads are free and even with CL they are still doing well,of course I don't live out in some economically depressed area either.Economy is great and piles of ads in the papers and CL.Going thru CL ads across the country they really tell a lot about the areas where they
are posted.

The problem with Craigslist charging money is my success rate is to hit and miss to pay money for. Especialy on the free-get it out of my garage-stuff. The end result will be anything I can't get rid of by word of mouth will just go to the dump useable or not. The other problem is Craigslist is not worth money because there are too many other much better pay sites. Cars.com, autottrader.com, tractor house, etc., that not even accounting for Facebook and other free sites kiji oodle, etc. Craiglist has this attitude like there the only game in town. Just like a few other websites that we won't mention.

"Services" category is impacted by the new federal law about human trafficking since so many "services" involve minor girls "servicing" creepy men. Some on-line places are doing away with the category altogether.

Or once they start charging for ads you'll start seeing a lot less $6,000 project 8N's and Farmall H's and $4,500 rusty "rat rod" truck cabs, if you've got to pay for the ad and pay to renew it folks might
be less inclined to ask they pie in the sky I hope I find someone stupid enough to pay this amount price as well as cutting back on the data mining scam ads.

CL shutdown the creepy section know as "personals" all together sometime in the past month.

Craigslist has charged fees to certain for profit, commercial, dealer. employment ads, etc. since day one.
Those fees subsidize the free ads.
