What's old is new again...

I bought this pickup in March of 1981...factory ordered it with a 6 cylinder HD 4 speed manual trans, HD suspension and posi rear for a work truck on the farm. Still single at the time, so I fancied it up a bit with the top of the line Silverado trim level, styled wheels and two tone paint....probably one of one. Drove it for 15 years and over 200k miles. Sold it to a neighbour who drove it for another 10 years then parked it out in the field for another 10 years. I knew it as there, so I approached him last week, bought it and trailered it home. A bit of gas and it runs! Does need a lot of work, so it may be a long term project. Wife questioned my sanity to which I replied" We used to date in that truck and it brought all our kids home from the hospital when they were born...." To which she softened her stance and I think I have her approval, albeit grudgingly. So, on the lookout for new doors fenders, box...
Bottom picture is the truck when new.

centash,
Neat story. Betting your wife will like to take a cruise in it when you get it all fixed up... a trip back in time.

No stopping to talk though. LOL... remember that post?

There is a place just east of Lindsay, on number 7 highway that will have everything that you will need. They bring trucks up from the south, and take them all apart, and sell the body parts. Boxes, doors front clips you name it. They always have plenty of GM trucks boxes. Bruce

Those old gals are indestructible.

I once made a good living fixing rust on '73 to '87's. Last time I counted, I'd done 67. A lot of them were a lot worse than yours.

My first truck was an 85 Silverado C10 looked much like yours(aside from the grey roof, and mine had split rear window). That was one nice handling truck. I sold it after I got a 91 K2500, since the old 85 was just to rusted out for me to try and fix....A few weeks after I sold it some one plowed into my "new" truck. Since then I wish I never sold that 80's square body..

Sound like a really good project to keep you young. It doesn't look that bad. In upstate NY I saw stuff where the wole side of the body above the wheel was gone and in the summer you could stick you flip flops through the holes in the door to cool your tootsies.

Sentimental value aside that is a beautiful truck! I know you'll love it and keep it forever but those style of trucks are quickly becoming highly collectable.

DANG! NICE truck and you're still with the grrrl that helped you "break it in"! Priceless.

I always liked the looks of those year trucks. I also like how they drove , but I had so many problems with my 1982 K10 it finally cured me from the Chevy disease NO MORE GM products for me !

(quoted from post at 09:05:40 03/31/18) I bought a brand new '73 Chev truck. A year and a half later it had holes rusted through behind the front wheels.
What could you buy in 73 that didn't get holes in the fenders?

Wow, that's a good story Ben.
I bought an '81 pickup new in the spring of '82 at the dealer in Wingham. 305 with a really high geared 4 spd (always needed 1st)
Basic basic truck. When I first saw it it had the little left hand mirror, no radio or back bumper. I had the dealer install a radio, two painted mirrors and a painted rear bumper. I still have the invoice, about $8200.
A number of winters later I did an extensive body job on it, changed to chrome front and rear bumpers, stainless mirrors and a Pioneer stereo.
Did the dash on yours crack as well?

Centash, there is a fellow over near Staffa whose business is bringing rust free truck and auto parts home from the south. He got me a rust free box and third door for my '97 Ford. The box was $750 and there wasn't a speck of rust on it. I think his last name is Beneweise. A lot of Huron county body shops get rust free stuff from him,you ask a few places and they will likely know the guy.If you are lucky he will find a box the right colour and two guys can change them out over a twelve pack some Saturday afternoon....Mike in Exeter

Thanks Mike! Got the old box off today, frame looks OK. Now let's see what the cab mounts are like...

That's about what mine was, got it in Kincardine. Goslings in Wingham is no longer there, even the building is gone, replaced by an A and W. Yes, my dash pad is completely shot, but all soft parts are reproduced.....but not cheap!
