I had a 11# roll of wire delivered earlier this month for my MIG welder. $26.70. My welding supply company delivered another roll today. $36.96. I guess the new impending Tariffs are having an affect already.

Loren I do a lot of steel fabrication at work an over half of it is high alloy stainless steel. My fabrication vendors and my pipe valve and fitting suppliers have been telling me for the last few weeks that their steel suppliers are honoring their metal quotes for no more than 24 hours. If you want it at the price we just quoted you better order right now as the price is changing every day. I've seen my prices go up over 25% in the last month. I bought one 20 foot piece of 3 inch high alloy sch 80 pipe a couple of weeks ago for a sulfuric acid dip tube price was over $7000 and I paid the shipping!

Randy, Automation in all industries are taking away as many jobs as foreign competition. The roll of wire that I bought earlier this month was made in Vietnam, the roll that I received today was made in China. How many USA jobs did I save today by paying the new price.
I'm sure this new roll of wire has been in the US supply chain well before the teriffs were levied, if indeed they have,
Seams like some price hedging, going on under the pretense of new tariffs.
It is a 2 edged sward. Likely the importers that bought previous stock may have to pay more for new stock than they were selling the old for, so they are in a negative cash flow situation, and adjusting accordingly, to prevent that.
Don't you wish you could adjust your market price for beef like they do for steel products.????

Our supplier of chain link fence has emailed us and said prices are going up. Most of the pipe ( post and top rail) is stamped " made in Mexico". Tariff?? Hmmmmmm

the guy putting up a metal building for me told me last Sat. he stopped by the metal store and galvalum had gone from $1.19 to 2.25 a foot overnight.

(quoted from post at 05:31:54 03/30/18) My last 33 lb. was $86 for .035, hey rrlund we have 2 Oliver shows one 1 mile and one 15 miles from home. Do you go out of state to any?

I priced a 44lb roll of 035 last week @ 2.44 a pound  before I could get out the door he said I can do it at 1.94 a lb. I did not take him up I need to check another supplier... Maybe it was a deal maybe not...

(quoted from post at 16:48:22 03/29/18) Only if I'm in the area for something else.

Yabut, don't forget that we're building a fence to keep the workers out. At 2.8% unemployment you need to kidnap and chain to a machine any of the locals that are currently unemployed.

No tariffs have been levied just so you all know. I was listening to agtalk on the radio a couple days ago they were talking to trucking industry about E-Logs going to cause transportation prices to skyrocket. I enjoy that radio show out of Worthington MN 730 AM everyday. Couple days earlier they were talking about mining industry in SD.

industries will use any excuse they can to jack prices and get higher prices.
Once the tariffs are actually in place, do you think the domestic supply will stay at a price minus the tariff on imports?

HELL NO.

"How many USA jobs did I save today by paying the new price?"

We're not strangers Loren. You know I had my tongue in my cheek so far that I have stretch marks now. There are a few who have said just what I said and were serious about it. I guess it didn't pull them out of hiding though.

Yes,I wish I could get what I need out of beef when I need it instead of having an anxiety attack when I'm opening the check from the sale barn.

(quoted from post at 03:49:28 03/30/18) No, we are building a wall to keep illegal aliens out.

Sure that is the official reason why we are building it. Are you going to do your part and go help the farmers whose crops rot in the fields because they can't get the workers that they need? Or are you going to go out and try to convince young guys living in their parents basements to get off their couches and go to work?

I bought a 44# spool of .035 last week for $56.75 from Airgas. Lots of markup in welding supplies. You can pay way too much real quick. Oxygen was around $7.00 for a big cylinder back when I first went in business, now its 42.75. Welding wire and electrodes haven't gone up near as much as the gasses over the years.

I agree. When the government is housing and feeding people capable of working, it incurs a hidden fee which the .gov makes up by either raising taxes or borrowing money.
So getting people back to working is a good thing.

That fence, if it ever gets built, won't keep workers out. When unemployment drops, we have always increased the number of laborers allowed in.
That wall, if done right, will impede the flow of illegals. It won't stop them by any means. Illegals are not all workers though. Many of them are predatory. Some are criminals looking for new pasture to rob murder etc. Some are deadbeats looking to steal in another way by obtaining medical care, or welfare benefits. Some are drug smugglers bringing their over flow of criminal activity with them which endangers the United States citizens who live in the area.
If done right, that wall will also stop exploitation. The majority of women who cross the border are assaulted. Many are kidnapped and forced into illegal activities. Many are used as mules, made to carry drugs. People who cannot keep up with the group are left to die, abandoned.
Why would anyone support such evil?

ebay

I've bought at least 6 of the 11 pounders off ebay for as low as $17 a spool. All have welded just fine. I'm not doing anything that will be ASTM certified so saving some money is fine with me.
