A man had his dog in the car. When he stopped and got out of his car, he had the door open and told the dog to stay. A woman was getting out of her car at the same time. She said to him " Sir. it works better to just put it in Park"

One time at my dad's service station, probably in the mid 60's, a man stopped his car in the drive, failed to put it in park, and the car started rolling away.

He chased it down, it was going slow and didn't get far.

Got in, revved the engine wide open, dropped it in gear and burned the tires the full distance it had rolled, maybe 20 ft!

Then when he stopped, revved the engine again, full throttle screaming for way too long! Shut it off, slammed the door cussing a streak.

Didn't take long for someone to comment "Guess you taught it lesson on 'stay' didn't you!" LOL

Bet it was a Ford. Right about then they had a rash of their 3 speed automatics popping out of park into reverse. Happened to me once with a Hertz rented Ford LTD.

Wasen't just the fords. Was driving down a street and saw the backup lights come on from a car parked at the curb.I stoped to let him get room to pull out into the street and realized there is no one in the car.The car did a very nice 90* across two lanes of traffic and came to rest with its right side against the side of a building. It was a late model pontiac. Saw ford do it too.It was ideling in a service bay at a local service station.Dropped it self into reverse and backed itself bumping and clattering over the lift.

I used to know a guy that was a private insurance adjuster and was part of a crew that looked into those transmission problems. The problems were the transmissions were shipped with plastic plugs in all the holes for cooling lines, etc. When they installed the transmissions they just punched the plugs inside the transmissions rather than removing them. They got in mechanism, etc.
